“Great hotel for a great price”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

I've stayed at the Hotel Gouverneur Place Dupuis in Montreal many times now. I have never been disappointed. It is centrally located and easy to get to upon entering the city core. The beds are very comfortable and the place is clean. If you think you're saving money by staying at a place $20 cheaper a night, you're fooling yourself. Staff are friendly and when I ask nicely, I get upgraded - free.

This was once, 5 years ago anyway, a well run and comfortable hotel offering decent accommodation for a fair and reasonable price.
No more.
Maintenance of rooms is sorely needed and the beds have seen better days.
The hotel claims to be a 4 star establishment. No way. Try 2 stars.
None of this is to say it is a bad hotel. It just ought to be a lot better for the price charged - about $127 AAA rate which is good for a city hotel but not a bargain.
On the plus side, higher floors are relatively quiet, elevators are fast and sufficient in number and the breakfast buffet at $16 while not cheap is good quality and worth the money.

Room Tip: Look at your room first! Some have better beds than others. Some will have better maintained bathr...

We stayed for 4 nights on a long weekend trip to Montreal. Spent too much time moving rooms and providing feedback on noise and poor maintenance.
To be fair the hotel refunded the cost of some of our stay but this took some negotiating and we did not come to the city to spend time on this.
The beds are very comfortable, rooms generally well furnished and the hotel has potential but needs to sharpen up on maintenance, refurbishment and the demeanour of staff.

Room Tip: Do not accept rooms adjacent the elevator shafts unless you can sleep through anything. Rooms on We...

The location was good for me, located in the gay village and central Montreal. The rooms were very old. The fixtures in the bathrooms were old, the furniture was old, the tub was old and cracked. The shower leaked all over the floor. The TVs were very old. The mattresses were not comfortable and the bedding was cheap.

Central location. Room was clean, but looked worn--depressingly so. I wondered if the hotel will be closed soon or sold to another owner. Under the mattress was a piece of plywood. From approximately 10 pm to midnight, loud noises in room, presumably from the HVAC or plymbing systems. Fortunately, ti stopped after then. Breakfast service seemed overpriced but otherwise okay.. Entire experience was rather depressing, of a hotel awaiting the end, whatever it might be.

Hello Bensonhurst,

First, I would like to thank you for your comment. To respond to the question you may have, we are not closing or being sold . We understand that renovation would be helpful but we've been in the hospitality business for more than 20 years and by far we are at our guest service.

I would propose if we have the chance to welcome you again, the Business Class room categories that will offer you a magnificent view of Montreal City, more comfortable bedroom as well and located on private floors.

Best regards,
Chantale Dubé

This location is amazing. It is right in the center of everything. We took the 747 express from the airport to the hotel. We checked in and got our room right away. The room was pretty average and clean. The only thing I did not like about the room were the pillows were very firm and not comfortable at all. We booked the hotel six months ago so got a great deal. We didn't realize it was the host hotel for the fetish festival so it made for some very intersting people watching no matter where you went in the hotel! :-) All staff members we ran into were friendly and helpful. Tip - We didn't realize until the last day there is a IGA grocery store right in the same building if you want to buy any groceries/snacks/drinks for your room.

We've always wanted to stay at the Gouverneur Place because it's at the very beginning of the gay village. Considering that we would be spending most of our time in that area (bars, shops etc.) we didn't want to have to travel far. We got a great deal on the room for one night through an online site and were happy. If we would've had to pay what they were asking full price we would've been upset. The front desk staff were super helpful with everything but overall the room was just ok. Great view of the city from our room, and the bathroom was clean. I'm not looking for a 5 star diamond suite but I do look for comfort and this was decent. There was a convention going on all weekend that involved a lot of costumes and outlandish behavior but being that the hotel is in the heart of the gay village, the staff took it all in stride and was courteous and helpful to all. A major drawback for this reviewer was the lack of a door person to keep the homeless and street beggars away from the front door. other than that, it wasn't a bad experience there and I'd give it 3/5. I'd stay there again for the convenience of the location but if I want to splurge and spend more, I'd probably stay elsewhere.
