Best Western Plus Montreal Downtown-Hotel Europa
Ranked #61 of 165 Hotels in Montreal
Reviewed July 7, 2013

Pros: This hotel is right in the heart of downtown Montreal. Restaurants, boutiques and shopping stores are just around the corner, the streets are alive at night. Close to McGill University. Walking distance to Old Montreal, Notre Dame and the Port (it's about a 20min walk), but it's great to sight see on your feet anyhow. Friendly staff, willing to help.

Cons: The room was nice, we were on the 6th floor attic?..the room was new and nicely furnished however i was not a big fan of the hardwood floor. I think it made it feel empty. A rug would be nice for decor. One thing i did not like was the shower - made such a high pitched noice, it hurts your ears everytime someone takes a shower! The AC was loud too at night. If none of that bothers you..the place is alright.

No continental breakfast

Don't park at the "Hotel Parking" right across the street! You might as well park on the parking garage around the corner. We drove in at 9:30pm and left at 2pm..the guy charged us $40 US for parking there! It was robbery! For the price you pay..might as well stay at the better hotel for an extra $20.

Room Tip: Don't pick the "attic rooms"

The hotel was fine--clean, ok sized rooms (bathroom is tiny...but it is a city hotel after all), and good location in walking distance to everything we wanted to so. Here are the two cons. (1) if you need parking, go in first to check in and ask for a voucher for the nearby parking garage. You get a discounted rate, $13 per night I think. We learned this the hard way when no one told us this and we paid $50 to park at the shady lot across the street for two nights, though luckily we were able to get most of our money back and park in the decent garage. I know, stupid to bring a hotel to a city, but it was a stop on a road trip. (2) I don't get why it's "plus" because there are absolutely no amenities that aren't standard any where else. No free wifi, breakfast, on-site parking...don't get it.

Overall I would consider it on a future trip, if I got a good deal like I did this time around.

We stayed in this hotel when on a recent vacation to celebrate a birthday. The location is excellent for attending hockey games at the Bell Centre and shopping, dining along St. Catherine Street, etc.. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of our room; it and the bathroom appeared to have been recently redecorated. It had a European feel, with wooden floors rather than carpet which I liked as I worry about the cleanliness of carpets. Parking is an issue. The parking lot across the street doesn't belong to the hotel, and yet it had a sign saying hotel parking. The hotel parking lot is a block away, not a bad distance, but not as handy as across the street would have been. Service was good; reception was helpful and my husband and I agreed we'll come back.

Room Tip: Don't park across the street, use the actual hotel parking instead, it's better value.

My wife and I recently stayed at this property for the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, June 7-10. It was our first time but we have stayed at other Best Westerns in Montreal before. We were able to get an acceptable price point given the weekend sellouts and price increases. $925 total for 3 nights. Free WiFi. The hotel is in good shape but nothing exceptional. Our room was on the small side...probably less than 300 sq ft. There was a "full" sized bed...smaller than a Queen or King sized. The bathroom was tiny...knees would hit the bathtub. Housekeeping service was pleasant and non-intrusive and kept the room clean. The hotel has a couple of independent restaurants (breakfast/lunch) and a full bar/full menu restaurant. Since the weekend is special, many places put a premium on everything (the full menu restaurant mandated that we order food whilst sitting at the bar...not just drinks). Nonetheless, the appeal of the hotel is that it's very centrally located to both the Metro and to walking around St. Catherine St. The area is relatively safe but there were a couple of nights where there was some drunken activity outside the hotel. Parking options are limited to street, parking lot across the street (outdoors and they move your car to fit other cars) or a nearby parking garage. We opted for the parking garage on Rue Stanley as it's indoors, monitored and about the same price as the one across the street. They don't have valet parking. The hotel layout is a bit strange where you walk downstairs from the street to get to the main lobby and elevators. Overall, we typically don't stay at hotels at this level but for a sports weekend it sufficed. I would recommend it in such circumstances but otherwise, look at higher end hotels such as Loew's.

Room Tip: Street noise from the front facing rooms can be tough, especially if you're a light sleeper. Th...

We stayed here during the Grand Prix weekend as the prices of hotels were really expensive during the event. We usually stay at the Delta or Hilton. The hotel was good. Clean, quiet and staff treated us well. The rooms are small as most other people have said. The view...well there isn't one. The beds are comfortable and having a fridge was really nice. i would really recommend getting a king room. I saw a regular room and it was really small. Overall it was good for the money and the location can't be beat especially if you are attending anything at the Bell Centre.

Well located. Very clean room. Just right for the price. Comfortable bed. Noisy airconditioning. Cora’s breakfast on site, great idea ! Not the greatest place to be served in French, but no issue for us.

This hotel, as other reviewers note, is perfectly situated for shopping on Ste. Catherine's (Ogilvy's, the high end department store, at one end--three blocks from the hotel-- and the Hudson's Bay at the other, with all the chain stores, including Brown's Shoes and Sephora, in between). It's also just a couple of blocks from Concordia University. Breakfast at Cora's off the lobby (for Americans this is a breakfast chain--omelettes, crepes, eggs) is really slow, but there is a Starbucks on Peel Street three blocks from the hotel and a Second Cup only one block away on Ste. Catherines. Coffee maker is in the room, as is a mini fridge. Great neighbourhood restaurants include Les Mas des Oliviers (French, with prix fixe dinners around $30 each for three courses), Sir Taj (Indian with atmosphere) and Playathai. Spadiva is very close and a large full-service spa, that did an excellent manipedi. Location is great. But the room did not feel comfortable. Laminate wood floors are clean, but cold underfoot (bring socks! You'll need them even in the summer). Even large rooms are small. Noisy airconditioning. Bathroom has no counter, only a tiny glass shelf above the toilet. Bathtub/shower was tiny. Bottom line is that this is fine if price is an issue, but next time I'd prefer to spend a little more to feel I'd had a treat.

Room Tip: Ask for high rooms for less traffic/AC noise.
