“Easy bicycle ride with scenery”
Reviewed June 21, 2014

We rent a bicycle at "Ma Bicyclette" on the canal at Atwater. Did a couple of hours riding on the canal, all the way to the tip of the island. Easy ride, well maintained bicycles. Some people but not too many with some real cyclists as well as joggers and families

“Disappointing. ”
Reviewed June 19, 2014 via mobile

The hotel concierge recommended we walk down to the canal area and hire a bike. He said the area was a top highlight in the city. We were very disappointed. We had to walk through some fairly low housing areas to get to the canal, appeared quite safe, but certainly not a pleasant walk. The canal area itself has cleverly taken old factories and converted them into city living. The trees and park areas are nice but it still feels too industrial and the graffiti everywhere adds to the drab feel. From a picturesque viewpoint I'd score a 2-3. The markets nearby looked good.

“Industrial heritage in a park setting.”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

For local and visitors alike, a ride, walk or row along the section of the Lachine canal in the South-West borough of Montreal is a real treat, particularly if you include a stop at Atwater market to load up on picnic supplies, or some brochettes from the Satay brothers stand at the market.

This linear park along the canal, and rail road tracks under Parks Canada auspices displays the best and most dramatic of Montreal's industrial heritage in naked or recycled form. A pit stop at the St-Ambroise beer garden for refreshment of local famous beers and beer-based menu also highly recommended, as well as observing the workings of the St-Paul locks, a bit further Wsest.

Several foot and bike bridges along the way, enable crossing the canal in other to enjoy the view from both sides. One caveat, however, do not cross the condemned rail road bridge with very few if any warning signs just West of Atwater market, because the Railroad police hiding in the bushes, might hit you with a $250 per person fine.

Bike, kayak, and pedal boat rentals are available near Atwater market on the canal. Along the route, bilingual signs mark and identify the various sites along the way for a more in depth experience of Montreal's industrial heritage in this linear park setting.

“Rent a bike and enjoy the ride”
Reviewed June 16, 2014 via mobile

Safe and beautiful bike trails along the canal. I was enjoying myself so much I ended up riding farther then I had planned. I stopped off at Atwater Market to look around a little. Next time, I will explore more. Highly recommend riding along the trails.
