Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Called the Sailors' Church because of the wooden ship models that hang from its ceiling, this church was originally designed by Marguerite Bougeoys, one of Montreal's first teachers. Next to the Chapel, the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum ($) presents fascinating stories/accounts and significant objects to showcase the life and work of Marguerite Bourgeoys, Montréal's first teacher. Visitors can explore the 18th-century stone crypt and climb the tower to admire a stunning view of the St. Lawrence, Old Montréal and downtown. The archaeological site, opened in 1998, has witnessed more than 2,400 years of history. In addition to its permanent exhibition spaces, the Museum offers a variety of temporary exhibitions and cultural activities, along with school programs.

“A beautiful small church!”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

This was the church that sailors used for their confessions before returning to sea. They left models of their boats, some of which hang from the ceiling. I visited twice, because its beauty and atmosphere was compelling - in the Old Town, by the Port.

“So happy we went here!”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

I don't often give 5-star reviews, but the Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours Chapel was really outstanding! Lots to see, great views from the two balconies, and really good self-guided tour and interpretive displays. The chapel is beautiful and the story of Marguerite Bourgeois is inspiring. Make time for this tour! (You likely need less than an hour)

“Beautiful Church”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

There is an entrance fee, however perhaps that is one reason the church is well maintained. Lovely alter and stained glass work.
