Owner description: Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount-Royal, founded by Saint Brother André in 1904, is a catholic sanctuary and the largest shrine dedicated to Saint Joseph in the world. We welcome everyone to partake in panoramic views, music concerts and special religious celebrations; come discover natural, cultural and spiritual treasures in the heart of the city. You will marvel at the votive chapel containing 10,000 candles, the Oratory Museum featuring nativity scenes from around the world, the Original Chapel, the spectacular Garden of the Way of Cross, the Crypt Church and the largest domed Basilica in North America.

When you watch the movie, and you go here, you get a feeling of what Montreal is really like. You can't help wonder what it looked like with lots of pilgrims unti lthe Revolution Tranquille, but if you got Lourdes in France, then you get an idea. It is a bit spooky, but lots of fun and definitely, if you have to see ONE church in Montreal, this is it

I was slowly taken in by the understated beauty and architecture of the basilica, of the exquisite displays of world nativities, and of the serene chapel of votives within the basilica dedicated to the wonders of St. Joseph. Every statue was like a station of the cross describing the character attributes of St. Joseph, i.e., his healing power, his compassion, his fearlessness, etc. The inscriptions were in French with an English translation and I tried hard to find an English translation to take home, but alas, none existed when I asked at the bookstore. Went back to take pictures but it was too dark to read the inscriptions. Does anyone know how or where I can get a copy of English translations for the statues dedicated to St. Joseph within this chapel?

Such a gorgeous church- definitely a must see. You can definitely drive up the oratory, but I highly recommend walking the paths up the mountain.

This basilica is set very dramatically at the top a hill a ways out from downtown. But it's worth the trip on a clear day for the views, and the church and grounds themselves are lovely.
