Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

“Great experience”

The building is lovely, the glass exhibit was fantastic. My granddaughter,12, was with me, the museum was her first choice of things to see in Montreal.

“Good museum”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

This is a good art museum, but not a great art museum. The entrance is free and there are some important artists represented, but it is a little hard to find your way around and there are not a huge number of works by the best known artists in history. The museum covers 3 or 4 buildings that are connected by underground tunnels, but the names of the sections make it hard to know what is in them. Still the price is right and it makes for a pleasant diversion in this fascinating city.

“Chihuly”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

The museum itself is okay, The Chihuly exhibit was phenomenal. The art tends toward modern and avant guarde with some impressionists, there was also a small Napoleon exhibit. There are several buildings and underground passages and it's easy to get turned around.

“Definitely a highlight of our trip”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

The collection is not on the scale of a national museum, but they have many first-rate pieces and admission is free.

“Chihuly Exhibit”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

What a sight! The exhibit was so beautiful and truly amazing. This man makes such amazing things out of glass. If you ever get a chance to see his work, don't miss it. Not sure when this exhibit is done. There is also so much more to see there that is free. I will definitely return. It is difficult to find parking in the area.
