Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

This is an amazing museum and we were awed by the Michael Chiluly exhibit. I am so happy we saw that ending in October.

Beautiful museum and evidently very popular museum. The Chihuly collection is a very large draw and even has special hours for those who cannot attend in the daytime. The blown glass items are constructed into immense chandeliers, ceiling displays, displays sitting in row boats, etc! Well worth anyone's time!

Chiculy Glass expo was fabulous. Permanent collection is very good. Fine layout and good access. Basically two buildings combined into one great museum.

This museum is actually four buildings and it is beautiful! There is all types of art work- something for everyone. You could go back lots of times and not see it all. Unbelievable that it was free to get into. Definitely a must see if you are going to Montreal.

Besides the current exhibit by Chihuly, the museum has many permanent exhibits. Unless you're into weird modern art (eg a full-sized motorcycle lying on it's side, shot full of arrows), there is an extensive collection of classic art which is terrific. Only complaint is that the cost of the special exhibit is exorbitant ($20 pp)
