Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

We went to see the Chlihuly exhibit. We paid a huge amount of money for an exhibit that was about one tenth the size of the artist's exhibit in the States that we saw 5 years ago. The museum
has a new wing through which you must enter in order to climb stairs, go through a tunnel, and reclimb stairs to see exhibits. The whole experience put me in a rotten mood.

Really loved the Chihully glass exhibit which is only there till October (I think). And also enjoyed the museum itself, as well as the cafeteria. A great half day in Montreal!

An amazing and enormousness collection of art, sculpture, furniture, etc. Loved it! The three buildings that make up the museum are beautiful too. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and all for free.

This is a great museum with just enough to keep you occupied but not enough to overwhelm. The admission is free except for special exhibits. There is so much to do in the free portion that you can make a half day of it.

My art-loving teen daughter and I visited this art museum and loved it. The layout between the two (or is it three?) buildings is confusing, but whatever, we wandered around and saw lots of great art from all major periods. Fun things were a Napoleanic-era exhibit with Napolean's hat and boots and a couple of drawing tables with pads and pencils that invite visitors to do a quick sketch. The Chihuly exhibit was mind-blowing. The cafe was pretty good. The gift shop has the usual nice but overpriced stuff.
