Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

The current Chihuly exhibit is very impressive. I also visited the contemporary galleries; they have a pretty good selection of works, with a concentration on Canadian artists.

Spent a few hours walking around this museum and all of the different periods of works. Has a nice small sampling for all eras and different locations. Even has an Inuit section. Well worth the time. Plus it is free (added charge for the special display).

We thoroughly enjoyed the museum - especially the visiting blown glass exhibit by artist Chihuly. We had never heard of him before but will never forget him now.

Always worth a visit, both for the collection and for special exhibitions. Well set out, with helpful guides and friendly staff, in French or English

We'd seen some of Dale Chihuly's gorgeous glass pieces, but we were blown away at his exhibit at the Montreal Musee des Beaux-Arts. We parked at a metered spot just across the street, paid the very reasonable entrance fee, and then were "lost" for two hours, transfixed by this collection. We must have taken hundreds of pictures. The exhibit is broken into different areas and different rooms, each completely different than the others. A large explanation of the work appears in each room, making your viewing so much better. The presence of Museum personnel in each room is unobtrusive, but I was happy to see them. Such fragile beauty surely needs to be guarded. Although there were lots of people viewing, I was able to get pictures with no people in them, so my photos look like post cards.
I've learned Mr. Chihuly will have an exhibit in Phoenix next year, and I can't wait to see it!
We spent so much time at this exhibit we weren't able to see the rest of the museum, so I can't comment on that, but the Chihuly Exhibit is not to be missed!
