Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

We visited the museum to see the Peruvian and Napoleon exhibitions. We were not disappointed. The artwork, photographs and relics from early Peruvian civilizations are spectacular. Actually, the Peruvian exhibition encompassed much of Latin America and, naturally, the Spanish influence.

“Time well spent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

This museum is by far one of the best in Canada. The collections are incredible, each portion of the galleries offers a unique glimpse in many diverse periods and styles. The fact that the permanent collections are free is also amazing. This embraces the thought of having people view and observe art for their pleasure and education. Incredible and a must see while in Montreal.

“Great permanent exhibit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

We popped in here because it was very cold out and enjoyed a lovely few hours looking at the permanent exhibit that focused on art up to the Middle Ages. The rooms were beautiful, different colors in each, and the art was great. I could not believe the excellent condition that the art pieces retained over the years. I say if you're in the area and need something to do, take a look. It's free.

“Great Art Gallery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2013

I have visited the Museum on a number of occasions, making trips from Vancouver to Montreal to see specific exhibits. There was a magnificent Impressionist Exhibit that outdid anything I had seen in Toronto. The China Exhibit in April, 2011 was my last experience there and it was a terrific one. The restaurant is quite nice too !
