Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

“Free and not too big”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

Free is usually good and we limited our time to the free galleries. Pricey for the gallery with the art on tour which we had seen anyway.

Compared to US museums, more non-Impressionst European art and less Impressionist art.

“Good provincial museum”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

We went to the Impressionist show on the opening day in October 2012. It's not a comprehensive view because it shows the choices of one couple, but it is very well presented.

The permanent collection of the Museum is of a high standard for a provincial centre.

lots to see in this museum, dependent on your taste there must be something for you, modern impressionists on display but you had to pay 20 dollars to see, so missed out and enjoyed the other areas

“At the heart of Montreal's art world”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

What a unique museum, with underground passages linking three disparate buildings. The new Canadian art gallery is a treat, with four floors each taking on a different period. And the temporary exhibits show lots of creativity. Hats off to the director and her staff.

“Lovely”

Very interesting collection. It also frequently hosts visiting exhibits. The one on Impressionists that we saw was first rate.
