A fairly quick museum to visit; in Old Montreal, if you are a history buff, but don't want to spend a full day in a museum, it is your place. Go to the basement and see elements of the birth of Montreal.

This is a small museum that might interest history buffs. It offers an insight on early Canada settlers.

From looking at it's website, there didn't seem much on offer at this museum, however as we had a morning spare in Montreal we decided to visit it anyway.

To say our expectations were exceeded would have been an understatement, while appearing quite small the museum is actual in three buildings linked by underground galleries and corridors.

In these building you get a excellent introductory show to the history of Montreal, and then are able to progress through exhibits which cover four hundred or more years of the city's history.

Additional to this there are usually several temporary exhibits available when we visited these were one about Marco Polo, and one about the Plateau area of Montreal.

All in all a great museum if you have any interest in the history of Montreal. It also has a fabulous gift shop with a wide range of items, although most of the books available were in French.

My husband and I loved this museum. We spent almost four hours there and loved the ruins downstairs with the different colors telling you which era the ruins were from. We had a delicious lunch at the restaurant upstairs overlooking the water. I would highly recommend not only the museum but the restaurant upstairs especially on a beautiful day when you can get an outside table.
