Owner description: Pointe-a-Calliere, the birthplace of Montreal and a National Historic Site, offers visitors the opportunity to explore history through an original underground circuit leading through archaeological excavations. At the start of their visit, an immersive multimedia show presents a high-speed view of the city's history, the remains come to life and the count down begins! The museum also offers year-round temporary local and international exhibitions. For Montreal's 375th anniversary in May 2017, Pointe-a-Calliere inaugurated a new pavilion highlighting Fort Ville-Marie.

This was probably our favorite and best activity in Montreal. The museum is very well done and spread out through a couple buildings. When we visited it was the last day of the Samurai exhibit (which was excellent!) and the first day of the Beatles exhibit (also well done).

The archeological ruins in the lower levels are very well displayed with lots of information. You can really picture how the city developed over the years.

Don't miss the multi-media show about Montreal! It was excellent!

This museum does have some good points. However, it was the only place we visited in Montreal where I sensed some resentment that we didn't speak French. The movie is super and the temporary exhibits were very good but we found the facility awkward to navigate (one way sections, you must use the elevator and not the stairs). Normally we love to take tours but the guide (who showed up 15 minutes late) to take us through the archaeology section spent so much time just at stop number one that we discretely backed away and looked around by ourselves. Be sure to take the elevator to the tower at the top for a great view of Montreal.

Interesting historical exhibits and shows. Very entertaining. But not $18 worth.

There isn't much to choose from in Montreal and certainly no large scale museums on the world class level.

So, this may be your only choice.

Took my friend Bill from Tennessee and we loved it. The multi-media show gives you in 15 minutes a truly interesting and comprehensive history of Montreal from the days of the ice-ages. The tour of the subterranean remains of the first settlements in the 17th century were fascinating, the tour guide interesting, and the whole experience just great.
