“Simple quality French fare”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Family of four with drinks and dessert for $100. Good sized plateau of charcuterie or cheese, good cassoulet too. Girls thought that their chocolate brownies were one of the best ever, very moist. Staff very good despite being busy on a Saturday night. If you want something basic in a good atmosphere call in.

“Perfect breakfast”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

This unassuming cafe, just down the street from Hotel Gault, offers a delicious breakfast menu with crepes, quiche, platters, even pate - all with fresh fruit and croissants. Eat here in the morning and you'll be fine until dinner.

“Mixed feelings”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

We found this restaurant by chance on our first day and had a marvellous experience. The whole place oozed French charm, from the singing waiters to the delicious smells of charcuterie from the deli. We were seated and ordered onion soup and a salad with smoked salmon, both of which were delicious and arrived quickly and were washed down by wine and Badoit. We decided to return for the last lunch before we left....what a disappointment!
We were served by a young woman who brought us two glasses of lukewarm tap water instead of the Badoit and beer we had ordered. I had ordered a cheese plate with salad and fresh fruit, an expensive dish but it sounded fresh. I received tiny pieces of six different types of cheese on a board with a few nuts, a spoonful of salad and FOUR grapes! The kid next door to me had a crepe jambon with watermelon, oranges, grapes, apple slices and various other pieces of fruit , all costing less than my offering.
Who decides what to put on these plates? Is it totally arbitrary? If you decide to eat at Marche, make sure you ask what you are getting when you order because it is really one of the more attractive places to eat in that part of town.

“One of our best meals in Montreal”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Tucked away at the opposite end of the Old Port from all of the tourist trap restaurants, this charming little traditional french chacuterie was one of our favorites -- so much so that we were there twice within the same week-long visit. The room is charmingly decorated and light fills the space from the large corner windows overlooking the street. The service was both pleasant and attentive and, despite the limited number of seats, we never felt rushed to give up our table in favor of other guests. You wont' find anything nouvelle or fusion on the menu, just good old fashioned sandwiches, soups, salads and a tremendous cheese and meat plate which was more than enough for two people to share. Highlights were the homemade rabbit pate and the traditional onion soup. Prices were extremely reasonable and many of the items on the menu were available for take out, at least during lunch.

“Enormous Breakfast”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

We popped in here by chance for breakfast and both ordered the Super Assiette. While we waited (which was no where near as long as some of the other comments) we both noticed the waiters singing along with the French music playing in the background - it was charming! The wait staff that we had was pleasant and efficient, and when our plates came out we were blown away by the sheer volume of food! We counted 10 items on each plate - an omelette, pâté, toast, a triple cream cheese, fruit, baked beans (!), potatoes, bacon, green salad & ham. It wasn't "fine dining", but if you're looking for a good value, and a lot of food this place works!
