You can buy decent croissants in dozens of places in Montreal. Here they are excellent. I have not yet tried their sandwiches, but I'd be surprised if they are as mediocre as another rebiewer claims.
Van Horne, though a bit out of the way for visitors, is a very good foodie street. Outremont is the metro station. And Bernard is only two blocks south -- full of fun restaurants of different kinds.

Being a French, I am a bit particular on croissant and pain au chocolat. But when it comes to the paltoquet, there's no discussion needed : You probably are in one of the best place to have a croissant and a cup of coffee !
I ordered a sandwich and was impressed too. The place is a bit small so you might have to wait a bit, but it's totally worth it !

This is a review for the pastries and cakes only since the sandwiches are pitiful.

The pastries (croissants, etc.) are the best - crispy on the outside, softy and chewy on the inside. My only. Oakland is the price given that they are so tiny and there's no way I cannot stop at just one. The cakes are also pretty good (superior to the nearby Lescurier and Mamie Clafoutis and ubiquitous Premiere Moisson) but it has nothing on Patisserie Rhubarbe.
