On Canada Day I had several family members visiting, and we all wanted to go enjoy a meal together. There were ten of us and we wanted to sit on the patio end enjoy the beautiful day. We made no reservations or even called ahead but they were very welcoming and accommodating considering we had a larger group (yes we are those customers). The server was polite, and efficient making sure we all had water with lemon right away as it was a hot day. She even brought water for the little dog that one of my family members had tied just outside the patio area. Just after we ordered a friend passed by and we asked him to sit down with us. We were one chair short, but the manager quickly brought one more out from storage and put his order in quickly so he wouldn't be sitting there without food while the rest were eating.
Our food seemed to arrive quickly and I was blown away by the portion size, especially that of the fish and chips. I personally ordered the "Mexican burger" just spicy enough and exceptionally tasty. The onion rings on the side were excellent as well. My wife ordered the cheese sticks which are an absolute must try. She also had the haddock and chips which she was very happy with. Your choices for the fish and chips are haddock, cod, and halibut. My step-dad, a fisherman in his younger years, was also very pleased with his fish, chips and mashed potatoes, which is no small task because fishermen are very particular about their fish.
We also had a vegetarian who had the veggie burger and was so happy she went back for a second time during her week long stay in Charlottetown.
Also with us was a couple of foodies from New York, they too went back a second time to enjoy a meal.
I'm sure there is much more I could say, but to sum it up, I would highly recommend this as the place to get some good ol' fashioned fish and chips or even a burger and some cheese sticks. Great staff, excellent food and value.

A few weeks ago I noticed that a new restaurant had opened up in place of Rum Runners on Water Street called Water St. Fish And Chips. I finally got around today to trying it out and I was not very impressed. Our server was very mundane and seemed thoroughly bored by his job which is not surprising because the place was nearly empty, even at noon. Of course the fish and chips was a must to try and overall they were actually not bad. The fries were excellent as was the large piece of breaded fish. I did find though that there was not a good ratio of breading to fish and places like Churchill Arms or Brit's have much more actual fish. The tartar sauce came in a ketchup bottle and was for some unknown reason watery so I went without. We were also charged for coleslaw and not told that there would be a charge. That is not such a big deal but the coleslaw honestly was probably the worst I have ever had and I am even including the stuff some fast food places like KFC include. I got through about 1 or 2 bites before I gave up on the watery mess.

I hate being so negative but I must say that if this is what one can expect from Water St. Fish and Chips, they are in trouble. There are much better fish and chips options in Charlottetown with better customer service. I was very disappointed by my visit here and I will not be back. I was hoping for a lot more and I would not recommend this restaurant at all. For their sake I hope they are still working the kinks out, but somehow I don't think so. Look elsewhere when dining in Charlottetown.
