“Exceeded my expectations”
Reviewed May 17, 2010

Having stayed in another B&B in Charlottetown recently and was very satisfied, much to my surprise I found the Heritage Harbour House to be even better. The room was the best I've ever found, and the breakfast was teriffic, and with a close to downtown location you can't go wrong. I would recommend this Inn without hesitation or qualification.

We enjoyed our stay. I was travelling on business and my husband accompanied me. I was not able to attend breakfast each morning but my husband said that the food was great and that our hostess was attentive and so he felt comforable going down alone and enjoyed the time.

Our room was a standard Queen, much like a cozy hotel room with a small fridge, TV table and seating area. The loveseat would have pulled out if we had needed it.

We had our late afternoon and evenings to ourselves and the hostess was very helpfull in letting us know what was around the area. We loved being able to walk to the waterfront and stroll though the down town. Visiting the pubs without worrying about the car or a taxi was a bonus. We really loved the Pilot House Pub just a couple blocks up the road.

Would recommend this place to anyone looking for the Charlottetown experiance.

Just winding up a delightful week at this excellent inn a few steps away from the heart of charming Charlottetown. From the moment of arrival my wife and I knew we had made the right choice of a place to stay. We have been extremely comfortable here, not surprising after reading the glowing reports of previous guests. Innkeepers Arie,Jinny and son Michael are ever present hosts who can't do enough to please the world travelers who have been attracted here by the Anna of Green Gables saga. Our room is immaculate, the breakfasts generous and included in the rate as well as free internet, coffee, tea, biscuits and chocolate chip cookies on tap at a self service kitchenette. And there are laundry machines with detergent on hand at a dollar a pop. The Van der Gaag family will make restaurant reservations, arrange tours and keep guests happy. So you can tell we are "two happy campers" reporting from this Rolls Royce of inns.
One plus is the nearby boardwalk fronting the harbour ,ideal for walking before breakfast and enjoying the Sun.

Thank you so much for your inspiring review. We have never been reviewed as a "Rolls-Royce," of inns, but believe me....the compliment has struck a chord in my heart.

It was an absolute pleasure to have you here, and I hope to see you again in the future.

We stayed here for three nights in early August and had an excellent time. The room was spacious comfortably accommodating a sofa and coffee table as well as a large working desk and a fridge. The wardobe was very large with plenty of hangers. The bathroom was also well sized and equipped. Although on the second floor I was offered assistance with my suitcases at check-in.
A well equipped guest kitchen area is available on the ground floor, and another on the second floor - just right for the early morning coffee. Breakfast is served in two adjoining rooms on the ground floor but all food is available in each room while the friendly staff serve tea, coffee and the hot course as well as removing used crockery. We found the owners friendly and willing to chat and make suggestions for dining. The off-street parking was plentiful and well spaced.
The city was just a short stroll along the street - close enough for easy access but far enough to feel you were truly in a suburb.
Altogether one of the best stays on our trip.

We stayed 1 night in a room on the lower level (half basement). There was a musty odor when we checked in so we opened the window. When we returned, the smell was worse and we found that the sofa in the room was part of the source. We asked the management if they had another room, or if they could remove the sofa. They didn't have another room, and they agreed to remove the sofa the next day. They also suggested we turn on the air purifier in the room. We did this, and moved the sofa away from the bed. However, by the next morning, both of us were almost nauseous from the smell. I got up early and went and read in a common room. We checked out as soon as we could in the morning.
The room itself looked lovely. Common areas were wonderful. The breakfast was fine. We regretted accepting the room located below grade, and wonder why they rent it with that smell!

This was indeed an unfortunate situation, however, it is even more unfortunate that the entire story was not disclosed by this guest, so I will take the responsibility to shed some truth.

Our basement rooms are kept incredibly clean, and odorless. However, the sofa in this particular room had a stain that was not detected by our cleaning staff. This stain created the odor that was detected by this reviewer. Upon discovery of this, we offered to remove and replace the couch IMMEDIATELY with other pieces of furniture..we did not want to wait for the following day...we wanted it done immediately. This offer was actually declined by this reviewer, which is unfortunate as the bad odor would have been gone as soon as we removed the couch. They asked to wait until the following day for it to be removed, which was against our advice.

The couch has now been removed, and replaced with another. There is no smell, and there is no reason now, or ever, to "beware of the basement." What one has to "beware," of is not accepting customer service when it is offered. If you do not allow us to help you immediately when help is asked for then it is impossible for us to create a positive experience for you.

It is too bad that the $20 discount we gave you on the night you stayed, coupled with the fact that we did not charge you for the second night that you canceled without 72 hours notice, still prompted you to write a negative review which did not contain the entire truth. While I appreciate you mentioning our beautiful common areas and breakfast, you unfortunately left out important details in your description to further place a hyperbole on your negative experience here, which to me seems very subversive in my opinion.

To all future guests: Basement rooms are not sold over the phone, or online without explicit caution that you are reserving a "half-basement," room. Half-Basement rooms are explicitly described in any confirmations sent by us.

We loved this hotel and our room (the rose room). The breakfast was plentiful and there were lots of extra amenities--free DVDs to watch in your room, complimentary parking, tea and coffee in the parlor... We walked everywhere in downtown Charlottetown easily from here. We would definitely stay here again.

As a recent graduate from a University in Toronto, my boyfriend and I decided to take a road trip through the East Coast to celebrate. We stayed in the compact yellow room which was a great size for us and a great deal considering the price. The house was absolutely charming, comfortable, VERY clean and welcoming. The breakfasts were delicious (especially those delicious cinnamon rolls) and way better than anything you will pay for at a local restaurant. When we arrived we were a little apprehensive not knowing whether or not we were going to fit in there (due to our age), but one of the owners made us feel very comfortable as she chatted away to us and asked us a bunch of questions about our journey. As we were checking out, she gave us some extra cinnamon rolls for the road which was so sweet (and we sure enjoyed them!). We had a wonderful time at the Heritage Harbour House Inn and would be happy to return anytime!

I hope the new b&b down the street is up and running successfuly! Thanks again for a great time :)
