“THE place to stay in Charlottetown, PEI”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2009

We absolutely loved staying here over our four day weekend in PEI. Jay and Carol are the most wonderful hosts. The rooms are all beautiful, cozy, and full of charm; yet are still spacious and possess all the modern amenities. The house itself is lovely and we had to catch our breath when we first saw it driving up the winding path/driveway surrounded by trees. The breakfasts are delicious gourmet meals served on fine china and in antique silver teapots, and the food provided is plentiful. Jay and Carol are incredibly warm and friendly and go out of their way in their hospitality and service. Each day they provided us with detailed suggested touring itineraries and driving directions for exploring PEI. They would make advance dinner and tea reservations for us. They had several umbrellas for guests to borrow in the event of a stray shower. They also let us take a can of bug repellant for a trip to the north shore/PEI National Park. And as we were departing, they sent us home with some of Jay's special maritime lobster recipes (which have been published!). All in all, one of the best travel experiences I have ever had. Please pay no attention to the one (clearly outlying) negative review of this inn -- Elmwood is superlative. We hope to go again!

My wife and I stayed at the Elmwood Heritage Inn in Charlotteltown during a recent visit to PEI. The level of service, accommodation and food were all excellent. The location is quiet and private with an easy walk to the downtown/harbourfront area. I would stay there again and strongly recommend this Inn, it certainly lived up to it's 5 star rating.

The Heritage Inn is a beautiful property. Very clean and well kept up. Jay and Carol were absolutely the most accommodating hosts we could have had. The food was out of this world delicious. Everyday we had something new, freshly made that morning. We loved it, we would go back in a heart beat. We highly recommend the Heritage Inn.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights during our one-year anniversary trip to Canada. Jay and Carol were very welcoming, giving us a brief tour of the home, showing us how to work phones, TVs and fireplaces—Jay even pointed out some of his favorite films from their extensive video library. Since they knew we were here for an anniversary, they arranged to bring up iced champagne (they had a splendid non-alcoholic variety which was very nice considering we do not drink) with chocolates and almonds to our room. What a great touch! Knowing we were on the last lag of our trip, they even offered to have us set out laundry that they would have washed and folded for us at the end of the day. True hospitality. The breakfasts are splendid—be prepared to spend about 45 minutes on breakfast because it is served in courses and leisurely but they will arrange to start serving whenever you wish. They are currently doing an alternating sweet/savory breakfast schedule, so one morning we had scrumptious pecan French toast and another we had scrambled eggs and a potato frittata but always with delicious fruits and your choice of teas or coffee. The home is lovely, a spacious Victorian. We took part in their “sampler” package so we got a different room each night of our stay and they moved our luggage for us. For the lower price range, we would recommend the Nurse’s Room—it is still fairly spacious and has a separate bathroom and comfy bed. We didn’t feel that the Victorian Room offered that much difference from Nurse’s Room for the extra money but they do have a flat-screen TV there and slightly larger bathroom. Rosa’s Room was definitely worth the extra money, though, for the wonderful jet-tub in the room. Do be aware that this is an old house with narrow stairways (and three flights of stairs for some rooms) as this would be difficult for some travelers. We personally found the décor to be a bit too precious and grandmother-ish at times, but this is simply individual taste and we still far preferred it to a regular hotel—it fit with the gentle and old-fashioned feel of the island. Everything was quite clean and the towels and toiletries supplied were of good quality. Jay and Carol are also quite proud of PEI and eager to share travel tips, restaurant recommendations or history lessons with you. Sometimes they get a little backed-up in the morning with serving other guests breakfast, so you will have to have some patience! We enjoyed Jay’s discussion of Canadian history and politics and Carol provided us with great directions to see all the L M Montgomery sites. You definitely feel that you are staying in someone’s home here and may have to share a breakfast table with other guests, but if that suits you then you will truly enjoy this place. It is in a quiet residential area off the main street but within easy walking distance of the waterfront and within five minutes drive to the center of Charlottetown. All in all, a lovely home preserved with pride and presided over by hosts eager to make your stay the best it can be.

We found Elmwood Heritage Inn online and were a little nervous, having had a not so great B & B experience previously. This was fabulous! An 8,000 square foot original (but updated) Victorian home close to downtown, authentic Canadian antiques and furnishings with the luxury of all ensuite rooms or suites, many with fireplaces, all with beautiful hand made quilts, and television in each room. The owners, Carol and Jay met all our expectations of friendly, warm and delightful PEI people we had heard about. The breakfast were gourmet, served on antique china, with flowers and candles. My husband has a wheat allergy and Carol whipped up wheat-free biscuits and french toast that he certainly wasn't expecting. they gave us excellent touring and travel instructions, maps, guides, etc. If you want to experience Canadian history and feel like you are in a time and place where Confederation began, but with all the comforts of today, then definitely Elmwood is an experience you will want to try.

The Elmwood Heritage Inn is operated by Jay and Carol who by virtue of their considerable experience and love for the business provide a truly enjoyable stay. The breakfast was one of the best and the location was perfect for our touring. They provided great service and good touring information. We would recommend this inn without reservation.

The owners, Jay & Carol, have created a wonderful haven with this Inn. The breakfasts alone were worth the trip! A beautiful & lovingly cared for Victorian Bed & Breakfast. I will definitely be going back.
