“Captures the real spirit of Bed & Breakfast”

Over the years we have stayed at over 80 different B&Bs. Elmwood Heritage is now in our top 10 B&B experiences.
For us, one of the key features we look for in a B&B is "hands-on" innkepers. Jay and Carol are the model hosts. They are there to ensure your stay is memorable, and ours was delightful.
The breakfasts are delicious and freshly prepared, Another feature we enjoy is meeting other guests at the B&B. We met some very interesting folks on this trip and conversations around the breakfast table were enjoyable.
God willing, we will return and stay longer.

Room Tip: We stayed in the newly completed "Cook's Room." It is marvelous. The shower itself is...

While we only stayed at the Elmwood, it would be hard to imagine a better B&B in this beautiful city. The hosts, Carol and Jay were most welcoming and provided a lovely hearty breakfast. We had the room at the back of the second floor (Nurses Room) and it was spacious and had everthing we needed. The nicest touch was when they offered to wash some of our clothes. While we were there, a festival was in process and a parade passed the B&B. We were invited to join the hosts and other guests at a champagne and Orange juice viewing from a vantage point. All just like home!

I celebrated my 50th birthday with my two best girlfriends at Elmwood this August and I have to pass my sincerest thank you to Jay and Carol for making it an amazing weekend with the girls! After more than 20 years Jay and Carol sure know how to make their guests feel at home. I travelled to Elmwood many times for business back in the 90's and it is still one of my favourite places to stay in the Atlantic provinces. The Peake Suite was perfect for the 3 of us and I'm quite sure we'll be back sooner than later and would love to stay a little longer if we can. Everything is impeccably maintained and the property is truly beautiful. Thanks again.

My husband and I and our two friends stayed at the Elmwood for three and four nights respectively. We arrived to find a large beautiful Victorian home with a long private driveway. The home is situated approximately 15 minutes walk from the downtown area.

We were met by innkeepers Carol and Jay who welcomed us to their home. Carol gave us a very detailed tour of the home and suite pointing out the various amenities in our room. For an old home the house is outfitted with moderm amenities while staying true to the Victorian era with exquisite antiques and decor. Our room was located on the second floor of three storeys. We stayed in the Cunard suite. The rooms and house were immaculate. Our room consisted of a queen bed with tv, closet, robes and nice linens and French doors leading to the living area. The livingroom and bedroom have wooden floors. The livingroom had a flat screen tv, dvd and vcr, working fireplace, sofa, side chairs, and a table with four chairs. Free wi-fi and ipod docking station were also available as well as a vhs and dvd library. Our room also had a fully functioning kitchen outfitted with everything you would need including a dishwasher! Water and soft drinks were provided in the fridge. The bathroom had a two person jetted air tub shower combination and a skylight,

We asked Carol for suggestions for a restaurant and she informed us of two menu books she has for guests to peruse. One is for in town dining and the other is for the outer areas of PEI. She then suggested a few restaurants in town and offered to drive us there.
While driving to the main street, Jay pointed out various landmarks and took us on a short tour. The drive was very much appreciated.

Our breakfasts were served by lit fireplace and candlelight in the antique filled dining room on antique servingware. We had fruit every morning, fresh squeezed juice, a savoury or sweet entree and baked goods. The dishes were very tasty and presently beautifully.

One evening we decided since we had the room in our suite to dine in. We asked Carol if we could get a lobster take out dinner for four. Carol called the Prince Water restaurant and arranged the lobsters to be shelled (an unusual request) as I didn't want to leave a mess in our room and it was perfect.

I would recommend this inn to anyone as Carol and Jay were very warm, helpful and hospitable.

From our arrival through to our departure, each day was beyond what my wife and I had expected. Carol and Jay made us feel immediately at home and as busy as they were with other visitors, never seemed rushed when we asked questions about the inn and PEI. I could write for hours about the Elmwood Heritage Inn and all the things we enjoyed.

Room Tip: There rooms are all great.

During our July, 2011 we had a somewhat disappointing experience by being stuck into a third floor room that was confining and not worth the price of $189.00CN for the night. Althought the Inn is 5 Star rated I would not stay in such a room again. The morning breakfast was superb and the owners provided help by uptaining for us center seats in the "Queens Row" for a performance of "Anne of Green Gables" , a must see musical.

Close by to the Inn is a Holiday Inn, which I would look at if I am in Charlottown again.

It is unfortunate that sometimes a guest expects a different experience from what we offer. We were pleased to read his use of “superb” to describe his breakfast for two people which was included in the room rate. Also his appreciation for our service in obtaining last minute best in the house seats for the theatre (at a $6 savings). Another part of our personalized concierge service was also at his request; we created a three option route for him to follow on arrival day crossing on the ferry from Nova Scotia with mileages, route numbers, sightseeing and dining ideas with links to accompany throughout King’s County. As nice as Holiday Inns can be, our experience is that different types of property result in different experiences.

As for the house, we (and many other B&Bs) have meandering corridors, multiple stairways and varied sized rooms due to how these properties were built, mostly in the 1800s. None of our rooms fit the mould of a Holiday Inn, and that is intentional.

Importantly, in this case, the guest made his reservation in September of 2010 for July of 2011, ten months in advance. He had his choice from all of our 7 rooms for this one night of his vacation to be spent in Charlottetown. Far from being “stuck” for his one night stay, he selected “Rosa’s Room” which features a canopy styled bed and a six foot double whirlpool tub. He had access to the photos on our website and the description as it is currently written. While the unit is quite long at 45 feet, we intentionally use words like “cozy” and “angled ceiling” and “narrow” to describe this 300+ square foot unique unit, with the canopy area being the top of the turret of this historic mansion. The photos accurately reflect the space and the words describe it as well. There are also at least 3 Trip Advisor reviews from guests who mention “Rosa’s Room” by name and whose opinion of the space is very positive. (See reviews dated 1 Dec 2009, 7 June, 2010 and 22 July 2010)

That is not the point, however. What is important is that his expectations were not met by us. And for that we are sorry.

Jay and Carol have thought of "everything".... ...they are the most gracious, accommodating hosts....Their home is beautifully furnished and immaculate.. They have literally thought of "everything " to help make your stay a most enjoyable and complete one. Nothing is too much for them. The candlelit breakfasts were amazing and elegant. Every morning Jay or Carol would help plan your day with wonderful suggestions. They have a way of making all their guests feel "special" !!!!!!
This is by far a "FIVE STAR'!
