“A Bad Cramped Room but other B&B owner help was appreciated”
Reviewed August 4, 2011

During our July, 2011 we had a somewhat disappointing experience by being stuck into a third floor room that was confining and not worth the price of $189.00CN for the night. Althought the Inn is 5 Star rated I would not stay in such a room again. The morning breakfast was superb and the owners provided help by uptaining for us center seats in the "Queens Row" for a performance of "Anne of Green Gables" , a must see musical.

Close by to the Inn is a Holiday Inn, which I would look at if I am in Charlottown again.

It is unfortunate that sometimes a guest expects a different experience from what we offer. We were pleased to read his use of “superb” to describe his breakfast for two people which was included in the room rate. Also his appreciation for our service in obtaining last minute best in the house seats for the theatre (at a $6 savings). Another part of our personalized concierge service was also at his request; we created a three option route for him to follow on arrival day crossing on the ferry from Nova Scotia with mileages, route numbers, sightseeing and dining ideas with links to accompany throughout King’s County. As nice as Holiday Inns can be, our experience is that different types of property result in different experiences.

As for the house, we (and many other B&Bs) have meandering corridors, multiple stairways and varied sized rooms due to how these properties were built, mostly in the 1800s. None of our rooms fit the mould of a Holiday Inn, and that is intentional.

Importantly, in this case, the guest made his reservation in September of 2010 for July of 2011, ten months in advance. He had his choice from all of our 7 rooms for this one night of his vacation to be spent in Charlottetown. Far from being “stuck” for his one night stay, he selected “Rosa’s Room” which features a canopy styled bed and a six foot double whirlpool tub. He had access to the photos on our website and the description as it is currently written. While the unit is quite long at 45 feet, we intentionally use words like “cozy” and “angled ceiling” and “narrow” to describe this 300+ square foot unique unit, with the canopy area being the top of the turret of this historic mansion. The photos accurately reflect the space and the words describe it as well. There are also at least 3 Trip Advisor reviews from guests who mention “Rosa’s Room” by name and whose opinion of the space is very positive. (See reviews dated 1 Dec 2009, 7 June, 2010 and 22 July 2010)

That is not the point, however. What is important is that his expectations were not met by us. And for that we are sorry.

Jay and Carol have thought of "everything".... ...they are the most gracious, accommodating hosts....Their home is beautifully furnished and immaculate.. They have literally thought of "everything " to help make your stay a most enjoyable and complete one. Nothing is too much for them. The candlelit breakfasts were amazing and elegant. Every morning Jay or Carol would help plan your day with wonderful suggestions. They have a way of making all their guests feel "special" !!!!!!
This is by far a "FIVE STAR'!

As Carol showed us our gorgeous room, even explaining how to regulate the shower -- often a challenge -- we realized we were in a place where exceptional care is a must. We stayed four nights and truly hated to leave. It's beautiful, and I particularly appreciated the location for my morning walk. The end of Charlottetown's boardwalk is only a few blocks away, and I loved the walk. The inn is far enough away from town center to provide quiet respite in a pretty neighborhood, which we enjoyed. Carol booked dinners and theater for us ahead of time, and her recommendations were excellent. Jay's directions and advice were most helpful as we headed out each day to soak in beautiful PEI. What a team! What a place!

Jay and Carol must be among the most considerate hosts we have ever met. I had called in June to book a two-night stay for our fifth anniversary (wood, hence, WOOD Island Ferry, ElmWOOD, WOOD smoke barbequed rib cookoff as a day trip to Stanhope Beach Resort, golf, even though the WOODs are metal).

When we arrived, Jay, knowing that I preferred WOOD-aged bourbon to bottle-aged champagne, had a bottle of whiskey with two glasses and ice waiting in the room, which was beautifully appointed. It was called the "Cook's Room" and while it was just off the kitchen, was separated by two sets of doors and virtually noise-free. An air-conditioner beat back the humidity of summer, and the bookshelves were lined with cookbooks.

Aside from the king-sized bed, there was a spectacular double-headed shower that seems to have been built for two. While there was no tub (several of the Elmwood suites have jetted tubs) we didn't miss it at all.

Each day a superb multi-course breakfast was served, and everything from the coffee to the fresh-squeezed orange juice was excellent.

Elmwood is about a kilometer (ie 10-12 minute walk) from downtown Charlottetown, which allowed us to walk to the restaurants, pubs and outdoor venues each evening. Charlottetown is an amazingly safe city to walk about, and the history that can be viewed from street level is wonderful.

The Gahan House Brew Pub was worth two visits from us; we also tried the oyster sampler at the Claddagh (excellent), and pizza outside listening to jazz -on-the-street at Castello's patio. Even the 'son et lumière' presentation at Province House was engaging and informative.

The level of service went beyond our checkout, when Jay had reserved a tee-time at the Stanhope Golf and Country Club. He was aware that we preferred to walk, but weren't the best golfers in the world, and his choice of golf course was perfect for our skill level.

This is the best service we have ever experienced, and one of the loveliest settings, which we would commend to anyone.

The Elmwood Heritage Inn was a highlight of our trip to the Canadian Maritimes. The long-time owners, Jay and Carol, made us happy to arrive and sad to leave. Every detail is attended to, every glass, plate and serving piece used in the breakfast service is beautiful and unique, breakfast is a delight, rooms are charming and comfortable, and the advice from the gracious hosts simply could not be better. We wish PEI was closer so we could visit often!

This is a beautiful b&b, on a quiet street in a beautiful town. The Premier's Suite is as lovely as the website photos suggest, and the hosts are charming and gracious - we were completely happy with our stay!

We had an all too short 4 night stay at the Elmwood Inn. A wonderful stay with Carol & Jay being the most gracious & friendly hosts, nothing was too much trouble & they were a mind of information. Elmwood is a fantastic place to stay, so comfortable, beautifully furnished, convienient & truly unique. The breakfasts were amazing & we loved the daily change of silver teapots :-) .

We really hope to return there one day.
