“Montague river cottages”
Reviewed July 7, 2014

Stayed at the Montague river cottages the setting is very beautiful on the waters edge very quiet . The cottage we stayed in was # 8 this is a two bedroom unit with a pull out couch we have also stayed in #1. Everything in this cottage that you would need to cook if you choose to. Family size table in the kitchen area.
The bathroom looked like it had been redone the rest somewhat dated . Carpet . Outside had a picnic table & chairs a barbecue .
Close to the town with all the restaurant's , shopping , repair shops, golfing, backing a walking trail. A close distance from the Ferry taking you to Nova Scotia.
The only draw back with both these cottages was the bed it was very uncomfortable / hard . I ended up taking an air mattress putting in on the bed to get any sleep.

We decided on the Montague River Cottages for the location. We loved that they are right on the Confederation Trail as we are bikers. When we got there, note on door said to call one of two numbers for service. We had no problem with this, even though we have pay as you go cell phone. We reached Mark who was there within 5 minutes to check us in. Cottage had a bit of a musty smell when we went in but once we were in and turned the heat on (it was cool out) the smell went away. For rest of weekend, we had windows opened as it had warmed up and we had no issue. Cottages clean and everything you needed in them. We had taken a couple of things with us from our kitchen but they were supplied so ours were not used. When I initially sat on the bed I thought "oh-oh, quite hard" but actually had no problems with sleep, even sleeping in our second morning. Absolutely beautiful location right on the Montague River and very well kept grounds. Very central location in Eastern PEI, not far to anywhere. Only a couple of minor drawbacks - first not the best sound proofing - could hear the neighbours walking, closing doors (even with windows closed), but they are older cottages which have been updated. I would think would cost $$$ to better sound proof. Second the whole toilet paper issue - it was only two of us in our cottage but I would think if more than two this would be an issue. Not sure how much this saves the management, but I would think not much. The soap issue is a non issue for us as we always bring our own with us. Third, when we checked in our garbage/compost had not been cleaned from previous occupant and we found a dirty towel hanging on back of bedroom door. Not a big issue for us, but it could be for others. My only issue with it was previous occupant had put non-compost in the compost and I was not digging it out :) Overall it was a great place to stay and for sure we would have no hesitation staying again. Compared to a cottage we had stayed in at Brackley the long May weekend - by far better ( I should write a review on that horror story sometime) - and better value - more expensive for the Brackley one bedroom than the two bedroom we stayed in here.

Room Tip: I guess if more than two traveling (or a family) make sure to bring extra toilet paper from home.

we have stayed at the montague cottages for years never had a problem until this year when it went under new management . he was not on site when we got there had to call him & wait till he got there to get in. he took our money & left said he would be back tomorrow to give us clean towels but that did not happen he was there for someone else so we had to wait for him & ask for clean towels .that is a poor way to run the cottages. when the Frasers owned it it was great to go there they were great people.the beds there are very hard not good .. we will not be back.....

We have stayed at Montague River cottages for years and had no problems, until this year. The Fraser's used to own this property but now the Baker's do. When we arrived there was a note on the door to call the owners, so we did long distance for our phone. He arrived took our money for a two night stay and left saying he would be back the next day to replace fresh towels. The next day we arrived back at the cottage at 7:30pm and still no towels and dirty one still on the floor. We waited and he arrived at the office for someone else who had called him but made no effort to come and replace towels so we took the dirty ones up to get clean towels and he asked what we did with all the towels? There were four of us staying at the cottage and we used four towels, I guess that was too much! We thought that was not too much to ask considering that was what we were paying for. If you are looking for a comfortable night's sleep you won't get it there, the beds are like rock they are so hard! We will no longer be staying at the Montague River Cottages, management needs an attitude adjustment!

We stayed at Montague River Cottages in August of 2013. We rented a two-bedroom cottage for three nights.

I had trouble deciding between a 3- and 4-point rating for this property. I would rate 3.5 if possible. Here are some of the pros and cons.

Pros:

- Excellent location... Montague is on the eastern end of PEI and it is a lovely little town. It is about 40 minutes from Charlottetown, and close to a number of golf courses and beaches. For those looking for a low-key "non-touristy" PEI experience (as opposed to the Cavendish / Green Gables stuff), this end of the province does well.

- These cottages are on a bank above the river - literally about 50' in front of the cottages - and they are adjacent to the Trans Canada Trail, the former rail cut hiking & bike trail that stretches across the province. A nice ten-minute walk along the trail takes you into downtown Montague.

- These are very well kept cottages: extremely clean and tidy. The property is small but nice.

- The hosts are very nice, friendly people.

Cons:

- The biggest drawback about these cottages were the mattresses. They were hard as a board - terrible! We didn't sleep well at all during our stay, and this is the main reason we won't return to this property.

- One room in particular had a strong, musty odour.

- The cottages are situated very close together, leaving not a lot of room to roam about, and not a lot of privacy between units.

- There isn't much for children to do on-site. There is a very small play area, but with only one swing and a slide.

- This is nit-picky, but as another reviewer mentioned, they supply only the initial toiletries (e.g. toilet paper). It seems like an odd policy for a vacation property to have, and one that serves to simply annoy customers for such a small cost savings!

To conclude, I want to rate this property higher - the pros are strong, the location is wonderful and the hosts are very friendly people - but the sleep quality alone pulls the rating down a lot for us. It may have been one of the worst beds we've slept in at any hotel or cottage. Perhaps it was just the beds in our cottage... other reviewers haven't mentioned this problem.

I love it here at the Montague River Cottages!!!! It is so peaceful and relaxing. Waking up to a beautiful view looking out onto the river. Cottages are quiet and clean and Lorraine makes you feel right at home! We went for a girls weekend to the Island and we plan on making it an annual event - making the Montague River Cottages our home for the weekend. A great location - lots nearby and if you aren't sure what to do or where to go Lorraine is full of ideas and suggestions! Can't wait to go back next year!!!!!
