“JEWEL ALONG THE RIVER”

The most beautiful part of Windsor, Ontario is along the Detroit River where hundreds of acres have been developed into flower and tree filled park lands. You can walk or bike for miles along a paved laneway that takes you through various sections devoted to sculpture gardens, rose gardens and just a nice place to sit and watch ships from around the world travel by on their way to various ports of call. The city of Detroit, Michigan makes for a nice back drop one mile across this most important waterway separating the two countries.

This park is below the road grade, so you have a sense of not being roadside as you walk along the shoreline.
I am not sure of how long this park is. It seems to go on, and on. At the far east end you find the most glorious bread scents from the Hiram Walker distillery and far to the west there is the Ambassador bridge. Across from the casino, there is a large open area that is used for weekend festivals and events. It must be a 5-7 km park. Much too far for me to walk in one go. At the west end of the park is an interesting sculpture garden that one can walk through. Most of the sculptures are at least double the size of a full grown man. There is a restaurant and washrooms at the mid point of the park. All along the waterfront there is a magnificent view of Detroit. It almost seems as if the two cities are one as you walk along this park. There are many wonderful flowers along the way, and the banks are covered in a lovely green lawn. Every little bit along the paved walkway are benches to rest on and people watch. The park seems to be a popular place for cyclists and joggers, but it never seems to be crowded. To see it all, from east to west will take the better part of an afternoon, or you could visit sections of it on shorter visits. It is handy if you are staying in a downtown hotel, as you can walk to the park, but if you are driving, be warned that there is only paid parking.

When in bloom, Dieppe Gardens is a wonderful place to stroll and marvel at the variety of flora. Very, very refreshing. While in Windsor, you can lunch at one of the excellent ethnic restaurants or take in the best view of the Detroit skyline and river.

Windsor is so fortunate to have a waterfront that they have begun to understand what a jewel it really is for the city. We have the most excellent view of the Detroit skyline and being an international border city with one of the most peaceful borders in the world needs to be utilized more as a favourable attraction. Although there is more that could be done to this waterfront area, it is still one of the most open and accessible features of Windsor.
