“Ah... nice”
Reviewed April 30, 2014

On a cold and rainy afternoon, got quite wet walking over, was well worth it. Warmed up with the wonton soup and ate as many dumplings as I could, leaving quite satisfied. It was a really great lunch and I liked the atmosphere - had a table near where I could watch the staff preparing the dumplings. Felt authentic.

“Fresh and Good But Not Great”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

On a Friday evening Mother's works well for a freshly prepared meal and efficient service at a reasonable price. The dumpling selection is only of moderate length, but there are always additional specials. The menu also offers a full range of North American chinese food too, if dumplings aren't your thing. Spadina Avenue in Toronto has for at least forty years been the centre of Old Chinatown in the city. It makes sense that Spadina and several major cross streets were the locations for many great chinese restaurants over the years. The area has changed in many interesting ways however, and one result has been that the vast majority of fine chinese dining places have gone north to Marham, Agincourt and North York. No problem though, because the fast casual places like Mother's Dumplings are more than welcome.

The restaurant is clean and very busy. Show up any time between 11:30AM-12:30PM and you'll have to wait for a table. Same goes for the 5:30PM-7:00PM time slot especially on weekends.

Mother's is not the best spot for vegetarians. It is an absolute horror for vegans. Stay away - nothing to see here. For everyone else, there's a good selection of tasty-enough food to satisfy anyone at lunch or dinner. We had several different chicken, pork and lamb dumplings as well as some mixed (wok'd) vegetables. Everything smelled and tasted good, and everything was fresh. This really is fast casual dining, so don't expect elegant presentations or anything of the kind. Good food on a plate - fresh and fast. That seems to be the motto.

The neighbourhood vibe in the place is palpable and it's great. Lots and lots of local residents from the eclectic adjacent Village and Kensington Market neighbourhoods and from the nearby University of Toronto neighbourhoods populate Mother's on a daily basis. Worth a visit.

“Good dumplings”
Reviewed March 14, 2014

We were there for dinner. The restaurant was crowded and a bit too loud, we had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. The food was good.

“Superb dumplings & more!”
Reviewed January 16, 2014

All the good things you hear about this establishment are true. Great flavours, incredible value and considerate service to boot.
On my visit I was looking for both value and to finally try their famous dumplings. I was not disappointed on both counts. The late great Julia Child apparently quipped: One of the hardest things to make is a good roast chicken.
Indeed some of the seemingly simplest dishes are often the most challenging but if well executed they become a favourite that you want to eat again and again.
Mother's mushroom stuffed dumpling is a fine example.
Simply listed on the menu as:
E3. Vegetarian ..................... 素陷包子….. 3.99
it's definitely worth a try and an incredible value for two very large dumplings at such a low price.
As you endure a particularly chilly Winter, counter its effects with their hot and sour soup. While the ubiquitous, and often mediocre, staple is so widely available it rarely achieves a level of distinction that's on offer here. Most renditions are over spiced rendering the sour counterbalance flavour elusive. At Mother's however both hot and sour like yin and yang live together in savoury harmony...

I look forward to returning and sampling from their wide variety of dumplings...
