“Excellent food, nice environment”

I was pleasently surprised by the quality of the food and the service at Cava. We were 2 people and ordered 8 tapas. It was more than enough. The portions are very generous. Everything we ate was simply delicious. Their halibut is to die for! The churros were okay. I've had better in other spanish restaurants. Verall, the restaurant is really worth every penny. Will definitely go back.

“Fantastic food and service, but pricey”

Cuisine: Cava is a Spanish tapas style restaurant.
Location: Yonge and St. Clair area. Accessible by subway at St. Clair or there is a city run 'green P' lot behind in the same building as the restaurant accessbile from either Heath or Delisle St. Inside there is a choice of short or longer term parking (pay by cash or credit at automated machines). Access to the restaurant from the parking garage.
Entrance: Not visable from the street. It is set into a pedestrian walkway that has a few shops on both sides including Cava.
Food: Very good but somewhat expensive. The waiter recommended 6-8 plates to share for two. If you are really trusting, they will choose for you (but I have no idea how much that would cost). Plates are very small but full of flavour and excellent ingredients are used. We started with warmed variety of olives. Olives came in a variety of sizes, flavours and intensity. Next was bruschetta with blue cheese, ripe fig half and lightly drizzled with honey. The cheese was a very sharp flavour that nicely went beyond the grocery store bought blue cheese and the bread was dry to not distract from the other flavours. Then the fried Japanese eggplant with tomatillo sauce. There were only about 6 small pieces lightly deep fried on top of the sauce. The lightly fried eggplant was not over fried and still exposed the flavour of the eggplant while you were left to moderate the flavour with the sauce. Too bad there was not more. Next was one skewer of smoked Octopus (about 6 pieces) on a very finely diced light bacon viniagarette and seaweed? The Octopus had a nice smokey, salty taste with a meaty texture. The texture was nice because often Octopus is made too chewy like rubber. Lastly, the brisket with white root vegetable puree and chimichurri. This was expensive ($22) for five small pieces of meat. The meat was extremely tender and the puree was a little sweet and completely smooth. Finished with a souffle (they need 15 minutes to make this) accompanied with Spanish coffee to drizzle and a maple cheesecake mousse with chestnuts, jellies and plum syrup. The mousse was very light and full of maple sweet flavour with 3 chestnuts inside the mousse.
Wine: Seems to be a good wine list. Lots displayed on the wall. Tried a recommended red.
The crowd: A mix of clients. It is an intimate space for about 60 people and maybe 10 at the bar(not a lot of free space). Generally a dressy, but casual place for adults.
Service: Exceptional service. Servers are very knowledgable about the food, ingredients and wine. You can rely on them for recommendations. Servers work in tandem refilling water and bringing the food and clearing tables so you are not left waiting for one person. Service is attentive, but not intrusive. They go the extra mile to attend to small details such as refolding your napkin if you leave the table and clearing any small food spills between servings and refreshing cutlerly and plates.
Decor: Tasteful wood furniture. Nothing that stood out.
Verdict: Excellent food and service. The only thing that hurts is the price. In order to fill up more, the bill is going to get a lot larger because sharing portions are very small. Based on price, I would see it more as a special occassion type of place.

Food was tasty and well-prepared. Bustling little place on a Friday night. Good wine selection. Recommended.

“Why have I not tried before?”

Yes, they only serve Tapas, or in my mind, sharing plates. Spanish style, with a Mexican influence, yes quite a combo.
Saturday night, could onlt get a reservation at 5pm, however suited us as we were going to the theatre. Nice welcome, good table in the corner so we could see what was going on.
Server was sharp, reco 6 or 7 plates, we stuck with 5 and opted to have more if desired.
Roasted Beet Salad, ok, cheese was a little lost in all the flavors.
Charcuterie plate, home made / cured meats... inc a fab chicken liver and fois gras that was super smooth and just lingered on the palate... could have stuck with that and some fresh bread!!
Halibut, probably a main course serving in many restaurants, cooked beautifully, nice and flaky, lovely flavor.
Venison, unusual for me the red cabbage was pickly , sweet and sour and was a subtle combo with the vension in a paprika glaze.... loved the dish.
However the piece d resistance for moi was the sardines.... 3 good size fish cooked with a crispy skin on a char grill... just loved the fish flavor!!! Not for the boss so the 3 were all mine!!! Great dish on a crispy fennel salad.
Dessert, Choc Churrios with a hot choc drink... very Spanish, and i have to say put Frank's efforts to shame.
Plus 3 glasses of sparkly cava.... about $130 for two..... well worth it and really do reco the place.... no 300+ in Toronto, come on, certainly in top 10 of past two years!!

“don't bother”

Tried it twice. consistently overpriced. The food served has very little flavour. Pretentious little restaurant, there are better choices in the area.
