After initial confusion with our reservation, (where we were seated in the wrong room for 15 minutes while our friends waited at our table in another room -- there were 3 reservations for "William" that night) we finally found our friends at our table in the middle room. Giancarlo's now has three attached dining rooms - one on Clinton, one on College, and one in-between.
The food made up for the initial service faux-pas. We started with the tasty grilled funghi appetizer. My husband and I split the veal tenderloin and a pasta and our friends split the veal chop and a pasta. It was all delicious. The pastas are house-made, and being Italian, I can honestly say that Giancarlo's has the best pastas in the city. Cooked al dente to perfection, with delicious sauces and accompaniments. There is no wine menu here, your server will take you to the wine collection and help you pick out something appropriate, which is a nice personal touch.
We had attentive service and it normally has very good ambiance here. On this visit however, a table of 5 twenty-somethings at the neighboring table were yelling so loud it disrupted most people in our room, judging from the annoyed glances everyone was making at each other. For an expensive meal in a superior restaurant like this (dinner for 4 was $400), I thought the manager should have spoken to them about their inappropriate behavior.
Despite this, I will continue to go back to Giancarlo's for their divine pastas and outstanding grilled meats.
