“Continues to be a Toronto institution”
Reviewed April 2, 2012

After initial confusion with our reservation, (where we were seated in the wrong room for 15 minutes while our friends waited at our table in another room -- there were 3 reservations for "William" that night) we finally found our friends at our table in the middle room. Giancarlo's now has three attached dining rooms - one on Clinton, one on College, and one in-between.

The food made up for the initial service faux-pas. We started with the tasty grilled funghi appetizer. My husband and I split the veal tenderloin and a pasta and our friends split the veal chop and a pasta. It was all delicious. The pastas are house-made, and being Italian, I can honestly say that Giancarlo's has the best pastas in the city. Cooked al dente to perfection, with delicious sauces and accompaniments. There is no wine menu here, your server will take you to the wine collection and help you pick out something appropriate, which is a nice personal touch.

We had attentive service and it normally has very good ambiance here. On this visit however, a table of 5 twenty-somethings at the neighboring table were yelling so loud it disrupted most people in our room, judging from the annoyed glances everyone was making at each other. For an expensive meal in a superior restaurant like this (dinner for 4 was $400), I thought the manager should have spoken to them about their inappropriate behavior.

Despite this, I will continue to go back to Giancarlo's for their divine pastas and outstanding grilled meats.

“They gave you attitude...because you did the wrong thing.”
Reviewed October 12, 2011

Hey, Table of 9, Birthday Cake people. Not defending the way it was handled, but it is STANDARD to charge a plating fee for a dessert brought in from an outside source at a nice restaurant. The restaurant has dessert on the menu...for a big table such as yours, they do lose money on dessert when you bring your own. It is standard to charge half the price of a dessert for plating. It is not cool to bring your own dessert to a restaurant WITHOUT ASKING, which by another review I read, you did just that. You do not bring food in from someplace else, why not bring your own starbucks coffee in? The only exception to this, is a Birthday Cake...which the restaurant does not need to honour, as it is not their food. However many do...WITH NOTICE. When a restaurant lets you bring your own dessert, they are being courteous...you should have tried the same.
Just a common courtesy that any restaurant expects. No restaurant takes kindly to this, I have worked in many. You were given attitude (probalby should have been handled better) because you made a faux pas. It is just not done, and if you were experienced diners, you would know that.

“Service style - relaxed but efficient, outdoors seating acceptable and wine list varied.”
Reviewed August 23, 2011

OK...it seems some folks get a rogue server every now and then, but ours had humour along with discrete style, knew his wine, looked after us well and allowed us to chat about life. We sat outside on a wonderful summers evening and as the restaurant is not right on the main street it was not too noisy. Watching trams trundle by gave a wonderful atmosphere to outside dining. However I did find the outdoor seating a little hard and uncomfortable after three hours.

A simple supper was what we wanted, however prices are at the higher end of the price range but the meal delivered what one might expect. Our Capacchio was excellent, fresh and flavoured with a delicate truffle oil and cheese, my gnocchi were firm but I found the lobster sauce a little too rich & creamy for my liking, and there was a very generous portion of it. My partners lobster salad hit the spot. We finished with figs and cheese one the same plate and it worked. With service $190.00 ...well we did include a bottle of reasonable wine, and cheaper wine is not sold here. You also get to view the wine in it's cellar rather than being handed a list, which allowed your server to demonstrate their knowledge. I found this a refreshing approach.

“Decent food but horrible service”
Reviewed July 24, 2011

College Street is full of excellent restaurants with exceptional food and great service. No need to be subjected to such pretentious servers and an apathetic manager. The food is good, but so are many of the 20 plus restaurants within a stones throw of this place. There is no wine list and servers are irritated itemizing the selections for you. Don't waste your time or money.

“Exceptional Italian Cuisine”
Reviewed June 14, 2011

Great high end Italian food. Excellent server (Nathan) and the veal dish and osso bucco were to die for. As good as anything in New York (Alto, Esca,Abbocatto) and Vancouver (Cioppino, Umberto, La Terazza). This was good food.
