As most of the reviews have indicated, Chiado is an exceptional Portuguese restaurant specializing in seafood. My wife and I, joined by another couple, selected Chiado for this year's Toronto's Summerlicious selection. Summerlicious typically comes with a defined 3-5 course meal, which it did at Chiado. Our meal included an appetizer, main entree and dessert. For the appetizer we split between the wives having goat cheese and portabello mushroom and the husbands having grilled sardines. Both selections were excellent although the sardines were very small in portion size. The entree selections included our cod, skate and capon choices. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful. Again excellent preparation but limited in portion size. Finally a selection of desserts. Again good but small. My pecan tart was really a one mouthful bite. Very tasty and beautifully plated but one bite. Really? With our meal we had a bottle of Portuguese Vinho Verdes from the very extensive wine list. It was the least expensive offering, but still $60. Fortunately we are not big drinkers, because a bottle didn't provide more than a half glass each for the full meal. We ended the meal with cappuccinos and lattes. The total bill came to about $170, including taxes and tip, per couple. I have to say I wasn't anywhere near full by the end.
As to the restaurant and staff. Impeccable. As we walked towards the front door a staff member moved in to open it. We were greeted by at least two staff inside. The tables were linen covered and finely displayed. The manager came by to welcome us. The sommelier came by with the wine lists. Our waiter immediately came by to welcome us and present us with the Summerlicious menu. A second waiter brought Portuguese olives, fresh bread and olive oil for dipping. Our waiter brought purse hooks for our wives. Water was filled as we drank it. Wine was topped up as we drink it. Plates were removed as we finish each course. When one of the wives left the table to go to the washroom, the manager came by to pick up her linen tablecloth, fold it and place it on the table in front of her chair. This is probably the best service in a restaurant that I have ever experienced.
Our ONLY concern was for the size of the portions. I'm not sure if this is specific to Summerlicious, as another reviewer has commented or their portion sizes are just small as some 'fine' restaurants have been know to do. But as I said earlier, Chiado is exceptional.
