“Spacious and elegant Loft with scrumptuous breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2009

We were so delighted to find this wonderful B & B. We hope to make it our regular place to stay when visiting Toronto. We were warmly welcomed by our hosts who were thoughtful and attentive. We had the pleasure of staying in the "Loft." The linens were fresh and of excellent quality. Everything had been provided for our comfort and enjoyment. We appreciated the beautiful craftsmanship of the hardwood floors and marble bathroom in the Loft and elsewhere. It was obvious that our hosts take great pride in their home. We were also impressed with both our breakfasts. They were delicious, freshly made, and beautifully presented and served.

My husband and I have just returned to Brooklyn, New York after spending five days in Toronto for theToronto International film festival. Our son, who composed the score for one of the entries, "La Soga" was staying downtown in order to be in the midst of the festival activities. While we attended the premiere and shared times with him downtown, we were so glad that we choose the High Park Suites house for our base. It felt truly like a home away from home - comfortable, attractive, relaxed atmoshere enhanced by the friendly hospitality of our hosts, Margo and Ziggy. From my initial phone inquiries about the accomodations to their patient guidance on the phone as we arrived in the city by car fairly late in the evening, they were unfailingly pleasant and helpful.
We enjoyed two excellent dinners at Latinada, a spanish food restaurant ,around the corner from the house to several very good breakfasts on an outdoor patio at the restaurant Margot recommended in the midst of the very lovely 400 acre High Park. We never felt hampered by the 20 minute (by train) trip into the downtown center (in fact we enjoyed walking it one day) and were always glad to return to the quiet street and lovely gardens of the B&B.
Hope we'll have occasions to return. Thanks for the great stay.

I'm writing this under my daughter's user name:

We stayed for 10 days in the Willow Room. We found our hosts Ziggy and Margo to be very accomodating and very sociable. Breakfasts were very good and were served in a very charming dining room with pocket doors and stained glass windows, and they are just as particular in accomodating their guests as they were in planning the decor of their different rooms.

They have excellent taste in the design of their rooms, as we were given a tour of them by Margo. Their homes are a labour of love.
It was great to meet people from all over the world (literally!)
We didn't have a vehicle at our disposal, and my daughter and I only had a short walk to the Keele Subway station, which was a great convenience for us.

I was made to feel very welcome, and our hosts were very enjoyable conversationalists.
I would recommend this B & B to family and/or friends.

Stayed in one of the downstairs rooms at "High Park Suites". What a disappointment! We expected a quaint little room instead we had to admire the plumbing works in the room, in the bathroom and the in the shared kitchen area. On their website, these large pipes running along the ceiling have been cut out of the pictures!!
What was even more irritating is the lack of soundproofing in the floors and the walls. We could hear next room guests coughing, chatting and having their tv on even on a very quiet setting! You could hear people moving around upstairs at 12.30 in the morning because of the very creaky floorboards which was rather annoying!
Also the bedroom doors are very thin to block out any noise coming from the shared area!
But I suppose Margo and Ziggy will be ready to comment on this and challenge my opinions seeing this unfavourable review.

Thanks to tripadvisor, we would like to make the comment so visitors yet to visit our place could get a full picture.
Our entire basement was renovated last year. Type of wall construction and finishes are typical for Canadian homes and climate. Since we were renovating with idea of tourist accommodation all walls and ceiling at that level were insulated with top quality soundproof insulation available presently on the market. If there was something better, we would definitely use it.
Every project has its limitation –our biggest challenge was heating system. High Park Suites is heated by hot water radiators. Pipes under the basement ceiling are not plumbing pipes but are part of heating and are absolutely essential if our guests are not to freeze during winter months. We did not want to build the pipes over as that would substantially lover the ceiling height; instead we decided to clean and paint them and leave them exposed as it is now frequently done in loft conversions. They are not dirty, rusty pipes – really, the look is not that unpleasant as you can see in the photos the unhappy guest posted on this site. In the winter time they make bedrooms/bathrooms pretty toasty and comfortable.
As to “creaky floorboards” – Main floor flat is occupied by our family member, single 80 year old person. The only creaky sound that one could hear at night is an elderly woman slowly making her way to the bathroom. With age wood floors are prone to make some sounds and unfortunately there is not much one could do about it. Please understand we are located in century old frame home, not in modern concrete and steel hotel.
We offer accommodation at different price level depending on size, location and comfort of the suite from $80-215CAD. Our basement bedrooms are considerably lower in price and are very much in demand by new and returning guests. Each of basement bedrooms (as well as bedrooms located on different levels) comes with ensuite bathroom with shower, in room small fridge, TV, hairdryer and fully equipped shared kitchenettes. We supply basic toiletries, towels and linens. For a traveler who wants a luxury at Indian Grove B&B we offer our Loft Suite – 1200 sq foot flat with cathedral ceilings, private conservatory overlooking the High Park and marble bathroom with air tub and separate shower. We do have other bedrooms and suites at other price levels as well.
We understand it is hard to make reservation based on short description and few pictures. During “cicamica’s” 4 days stay with us we had other bedrooms available he could change to if his stay at “Daisy” was not comfortable.

We have been staying at this Bed and Breakfast regularly (business and pleasure) for 2 years now. We realized it was time for us to post our thoughts as it is always much easier (and it is sometimes free venting) to speak negatively about things (negative experiences are often the result of personality conflicts) than to take the time to positively send some compliments.

So here we go for some positive vibes: to date, our every stay has brought nothing but courteous, down to earth, friendly service by the hosts (also owners) as well as a very clean and daily serviced room. Decor is charming with a mix of antique Victorian style, renovated ceramic and marble and lots of rich wood. You can tell that house is loved and most of all, lived in.

Margo and Ziggy do everything themselves. They are friendly and unpretentious (very rare in hotel service) - they are present if you want them to be (you can easily engage in a conversation) - and they are also mindful and respectful of one's privacy if one desires. They have always been there to welcome us upon arrival and we could easily reach them on the phone if we needed to inquire about something.

They let us in to their home, the one they actually live in, and they heartfully share with us part of their daily lives - that is what a B & B is all about - the closeness and simplicity that makes you feel 'at home'. You can tell Margo and Ziggy love having people around.

There might have been a time or two when we have seen folded laundry in a basket (that only confirmed that they do daily laundry and linens and towels are always fresh and clean) . Having travelled to many locations, it is obvious that this is what goes on in a daily run B & B: things are not hidden like in hotels nor should they be (this is a private home as well) - and because this is a very busy B & B (it has always been highly occupied the times we were there), it has never been a bother for us to see freshly baked muffins (because Ziggy and Margo have never served us anything that was 'frozen' of already baked) sitting on the kitchen counter (probably just out of the oven). We can appreciate the smell of freshly cooked apple sauce and brewing vegetables. It's part of the warm and cozy household.

Because we have stayed there (and still do) so often, we have stayed in every room. All of them are equally comfortable and space has never been an issue (they detail sizes and specific amenities on their website to better accommodate their guests) - there have never been 'bad' surprises or hidden information as things are very clear both on the website and when you speak to them to confirm your reservation.

Price for this location is also more than reasonable. The Toronto hotels are pricy and service, well, not personalized. A 10 minute drive or taxi ride to/from the downtown area and the subway is about 150 meters away from the house.

To summarize this in two words: just great!

We stayed in the Loft Suite and it was great, expensive, but wonderful. The whole house is delightful and carefully furnished. The owners was very pleasant and sociable, they tell us a lot of interesting things about Toronto during the excellent breakfast. The position was good, a quiet residencial street with beatiful gardens (and a lot of squirrels allaround), near a big park and near a subway station.
A beautiful experience, a real bed&breakfast, owned by persons with a vocation for the ospitality.

My wife and I spent six nights in the Victorian Suite at By the Park and were very pleased with our accommodation and service. Margo and Ziggy were excellent hosts: very friendly, relaxed and accommodating.

The room is equipped with a four poster queen-sized bed (very comfortable), a chandelier and a gas fireplace (not used--it's summer). Oriental carpets decorate the hardwood floors and Ziggy's pleasant landscape paintings adorn the walls, both in our suite and throughout the building. The ensuite half-bath (shower, sink and toilet) is modern and elegant with floor-to-ceiling marble tiles and high-quality modern plumbing. Everything was very clean and well maintained.

There is a lovely garden in both the front and back yards, also well maintained by the hosts. Two friendly cats share the home as well.

Breakfast was hearty and delicious, and included fresh fruit and yogurt, home-baked muffins, choice of pancakes or egg dishes, juice and coffee. My wife has some mobility difficulties and found the staircase difficult, so Margo and Ziggy set up a special breakfast table for us in an unoccupied room on our floor and served us breakfast there so that my wife would not need to climb the stairs any more than necessary. This was service above and beyond the call of duty.

Only a few negatives to mention, and they are quite minor. There is an antique wardrobe in the room, but it only has shelving, so the only place to hang clothes is a peg board on the wall (wooden hangers are provided). Parking is limited to single-file in the driveway, so there is an occasional need to shuffle cars, but this was not a big deal. Although the building is on a residential street, it is close enough to a main thoroughfare to get a fair bit of street noise when the windows are open. However, none of these spoiled our enjoyment of the place, and I list them only to provide a balanced review.

We would be happy to recommend this Bed and Breakfast to others.
