“A vibrant and entertaining place”

Yonge-Dundas Square
Ranked #37 of 529 things to do in Toronto

Located at one of Toronto’s major intersections, it can certainly be called the hub of Toronto. I do not know if this place compares with New York’s Time Square, but it is very lively, with something always going on - concerts, demonstrations, rallies, exhibitions & markets. And some of the street performers are amazing! Also expect to encounter a number of peculiar individuals-beggars, homeless people, preachers and proselytizers.

Such stores/shopping centers as the World’s Biggest Bookstore, Best Buy, Future Shop, Eaton Center, Canadian Tire and Atrium are located within a 1-2 minute walking distance. There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and simple eateries.

The square literally lights up with the festivities and the beautiful Christmas tree - I wish I could bring it back home. Great place to shop, walk and tons of things to do. Hard Rock Cafe is around the corner and plenty of eating joints make this a lovely visit. Definitely a must on your to-do list for Toronto (: Went there in 2009.

I don't think it's fair to compare Yonge-Dundas to Times Square. Times Square is in a league of its own. Nonetheless, Yonge-Dundas is a great spot in Toronto in its own right. There's always something happening every weekend in the summer, from a free concert to a festival. It's a great spot to just take a break from shopping across the street at the Eaton Centre. There are many restaurants in the area as well. It's also nice to see the large Christmas Tree in the square during the holidays.

Yonge-Dundas Square is Toronto's half-baked attempt at creating a tourist centre or heart-of-the-city area similar to Times Square.

It succeeds in being across the street from the Eaton Centre, on top of the Dundas subway station, and being an open space for warm weather street performers and some concerts. Beyond that, a Hard Rock Cafe and some fast food joints are most of what this space offers.

There is no iconic tower or structure looming over the space, nor are there tourist shops (like a mega toy store or M and M store) or other attractions. The place also lacks creative decoration or a cool street vibe.

All that being said, it is a place to see lots of mostly local people moving from work to shopping to university classes. It is also a prime place to meet other people who may be coming from other parts of the city.

If your on a walking trip in Toronto, this is one of the places. to visit. Shopping, eating, or just people watching, this place is entertaining. Certainly gives you a cross section of Toronto's cultural diversity
