Owner description: This watering hole has been drawing jazz fans since it first opened in 1951. Admittedly the decor hasn't changed much since the old days, but the sounds you'll find here are cutting edge. The Rex lures top local and international talent; Tuesday is the weekly jam night.

“Close your eyes and take a journey”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

The Rex isn't the kind of overly slick bar that is popular with certain crowds, but what it lacks in aesthetic design it easily makes up for in its purpose and execution. The music (performed daily) takes The Rex from a beat up bar with character to one of the best places for music in the GTA and arguably Southern Ontario. From the big name performers who grace the stage to the student bands from local universities, The Rex is perpetually stocked with great talent.

Overall: musically solid, drinks are good and reasonably priced, food is tasty. Worth a visit for a night if you're a tourist, worth becoming a regular hangout if you're a local. Ask for Stephen.

“Great Venue for Sunday Jazz”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

The musicians were fantastic and everyone of them looked and sounded like this was the best gig of their lives. The crowd was really into it. What a great place to spend a cold winter Sunday afternoon

“Live Music in Toronto!! - historic place with a good feel”
Reviewed February 3, 2012

The Rex is now pretty much the number one spot in Toronto for live music -- especially Jazz. in the past 10 years the musical horizons have expanded to include a lot of known international artists. It's a great casual space for listening to music, having a beer and then spending the night.

The hotel rooms a very basic, so don't expect anything fancy. They are, however, clean and well looked after. It's affordable and very central.

“If you really love jazz, you'll love this place”
Reviewed October 14, 2011

Looks like a dive. Sounds like heaven. That's the short review. The Rex is a beat up old bar in downtown Toronto with reasonably priced drinks and food. And that's not why you come here. There is music practically all the time -- two sets every day, three and four sets on weekends. And almost all of it is good. Sure, you'll like some acts better than others... Maybe you like big bands -- they are one of the few places that gets them sometimes on Saturdays. Maybe you like Dixieland, they do that Sun mornings. Maybe jazz/rock fusion is your thing -- that happens sometimes and then there are as many 20 somethings as 50 and ups. The more you like music, the more you'll like this place.
