It has been a desert when it concerns excellent Mexican meals. And now comes Agave y Aguacate which began as a tryout in Kensington Market. If you want to eat here, there are a few things you need to know:

1. Make a reservation
2. Don't expect awful Tex Mex because this is not the spot for it.
3. Go with a few friends so that you can taste different items.
4. Given the tapas sized items, go for three dishes per person.

My favourite had to be the stuffed poblano pepper. Delicious flavours and satisfying. Would not order the ceviche because it just looked tiny for its price point.

We've eaten Mexican cuisine at many of the spots in Toronto, as well as California, Mexico and lots of other places as well. While the menu at Agave y Aguacate is definitely not "traditional" Mexican fare, we also didn't find that it stood out particularly. Don't get me wrong - the food is good enough, but I'm not sure what makes it better than places like Playa Cabana or Milagro.

Service was friendly and helpful, but drinks are pricey and the portions are not huge.

Dismiss the G&M's 1.5 stars. The food served up in this Baldwin Village gem is gorgeous. Pollo in pipian rojo will make you want to lick the plate clean. Blissful lime charlotte will become a reason unto itself to return. Rose petal sorbet will evoke your wildest Oaxacan dreams. The service needs work and the G&M was spot on about the seating but these discomforts are soon forgiven. Chef Francisco is producing the finest Mexican food I've eaten outside the country. Agave y Aguacate truly is this girl's prayer to La Virgencita answered.

I brought a party of about 16 people here for an early dinner after a small conference nearby. The staff were very helpful in helping plan out the event ahead of time -- some of the guests could only stay awhile, so we arranged to have lots of dishes available fairly early.
Everyone thought dinner was great -- the ceviche drew particular raves, as did the desserts for those lucky enough to stick around till the end. I had been to the restaurant before, and highly recommend it in and of itself, but believe it also works very well for groups of up to 18 people provided you book well ahead and do a bit of pre-dinner planning with the staff.

One of my foodie friends brought me here and couldn't stopped raving about the place. We were lucky to get a table just walking in without a reservation. Main floor seems to hold walk-ins while the second floor was a little bigger with more seating etc. Main floor was quaint an busy with a small bar and a view into the kitchen watching the staff making fresh guacamole and other goodies. We got 3 plates to share, the stuffed pepper, meatballs and the chicken tinga. Great fresh food, great service and warm smiles all around. Became a little loud by the end of the meal, but that's what you get with a smaller busy restaurant.

Definitely make reservations well in advance.
