I've been in this location before when it used be called Firkin. Back then it was just the average pub with less than average customer service. I recently re-visited this pub under the new name Swan. The renovation looks good. The atmosphere was great. The new seats and chairs were comfortable. Felt relaxed and ejoyed the ambiance. We had the mix finger food platter and beers. It was good and tasty. The service was good and improved. Night and day difference. The bathroom was clean. Overall this recently renovated pub is good.

I visited this pub with my brother this evening. I was charmed by the Union Jack patterned couch and the English waitress was a nice touch. We arrived during happy hour, which is a great way to save on appetizers and drinks. I enjoyed my Chardonnay and my brother enjoyed his beer on tap. The nachos were run of the mill and satisfactory; nothing special at all. We enjoyed the patio upstairs and how expansive it was. Come to The Swan and Firkin if you are looking for a place to have drinks with friends.

Food is pretty blah. Typical pub food. Not great, but not awful. But the service is always fantastic when I'm there. The atmosphere is very comfortable and relaxing. Not dirty feeling, if that makes sense. I've been to pubs before where i immediately feel like I need a bath when I leave. Will definitely return again.

In the event that you had any doubts about what you already knew about the average pub, as represented by Swan and Firkin, here is a refresher of the main points...

1. The presence of an above average selection of cold beer on tap and in bottles is a must to be a pub. It is true here too.
2. The reality of #1 will always attract some people to visible outdoor patios and window seating thereby leading others to say..."I need to try this! This may be an above average pub!"
3. The food is basically beer, nachos, burgers, and fish and chips, but somehow the chips taste like they've been in a freezer for months, the burger buns aren't fresh, and overall the food is average at best. There is one real "signature" item that is better than other choices (this will be one of the aforementioned items), but you will have to figure out for yourself. the staff recommendation is more likely to be what they have too much of back in the kitchen due to a delivery error, rather than what is the actual best item.
4. The washrooms are of average cleanliness.
5. The service is below average. Either the staff has too many extra things to do, or they assume that once you have a beer you will not be concerned about other trifles such as napkins, silverware, or anything else, and by the time you have your third beer there is little need to return to your table at all.
6. A good location with lots of visibility helps compensate for other shortcomings.
7. Because of issue mentioned in #1, to the neglect of all other issues, you will at some point find yourself going back.
