“Amazing hotel with fantastic service and lots of style”
Reviewed November 10, 2010

What a perfect experience! My boyfriend and I stay in expensive hotels all over the world (for work) and The Drake was amazing! Clean and funky. We stayed in a Crash Pad room (nothing else was available) and although small, was funky, intimate and well designed. The staff was always helpful and really friendly. We had an all around perfect experience.

We're from Toronto so we knew that the hotel is in the perfect location with lots of small galleries, brunch spots and restaurants, but we had never really considered The Drake as somewhere we would stay and we will definitely be back.

My only complaint, although the beds were really comfortable, the linen was a little bit rough.

We spent one night in one of the "crash pad" rooms recently, and really loved it. The room was small, sure, but incredibly creatively decorated and with some nice amenities. The hotel itself is beautiful - in a great historic building - with several restaurants and bars. Best of all, the staff are incredibly friendly - something one doesn't often see in the hip/trendy places. It was slightly on the expensive side, but worth the price. My only complaint is that we weren't explicitly told we'd have to pay for parking - but we also didn't ask as we should have done. Overall, very much worth the price. Also loved the neighborhood - lots of cafes, galleries, restaurants, etc; also very close to Little Portugal, which was great.

We needed a hotel near the auto repair shop after our car experienced problems on the way out of Toronto. We were driving around lost in our wounded car when we came across the Drake At first we were not sure about the Drake Hotel. It is an older building in an older neighborhood. The night before we stayed downtown at the Metropolitan, a nice traditional safe hotel. We met Jonathan in the lobby and explained our situation. We were really stressed out, a car in need of repair, lost, no place to stay and getting late in the day. Jonathan was very reassuring. He made us feel welcome and put us at ease. He set us up with a room. Gave us directions to the repair shop and Jonathan and his staff even carried our bags up to the room. The room was interesting to say the least. Ultra modern Crash Pad. Lots of unique touches you won't find in a traditional hotel. Adult toys available, local art, free internet, comfortable bed. The shower and toilet are behind frosted glass enclosure, so you can't be too shy with your traveling companion. There was an event and live music that night so the hotel was abuzz with activity. We could hear a little of the noise, but quickly got used to it and slept soundly. Breakfast in the cafe was basic, excellent coffee and reasonably priced.

Jonathan and the staff at the Drake are the best. Welcoming, friendly and helpful, what a great hotel.

The Drake far exceeded our expectations - the staff are what make it so special - never have we been treated so well by so many - we felt like VIP's every day - from check in to dining experiences to enjoying a drink at the bar - everyone treated us like royalty and THAT is rare these days especially with such a young staff. The hotel is retro at its very best - the room was adorable and plush - the bed and linens perfect - the toiletries gorgeous. Being guests and being able to wander from venue to venue within the hotel with our cocktails in tow was so much fun...about as close to a celebrity as we will ever get. Jonathan and his staff are THE best hosts in the city and the hotel, THE Grande Dame of all hotels - it is a destination itself! Cheers guys - can't wait for our next stay!

It has been said here time and again and now we know for ourselves: This place is a gem!
My husband Adam and I stayed at the Drake from the 18th until the 22nd of October and had a more than wonderful stay! Our room was fabulous (we stayed in the suite) and the meals and ambiance (in the cafe in the mornings as well as in the lounge in the evenings) were extraordinary! I loved the granola & fruit, Adam leaned to the muffins for breakfast and we both very much enjoyed the Temaki for dinner!
The staff is very down to earth and a relief (!) in comparison to other hotels.
As far as exploring downtown: ask the staff for some tokens for the streetcar and subway and off you go. The streetcar has its own stop right in front of the hotel and the TTC is very user friendly as we found out.
We will most certainly come back to this hotel on our next visit to Toronto!

ps I hope the friendly flght attendant on board our return flight to Amsterdam will follow up on our advice and take his husband to the Drake some time soon....!

@Jonathan: Thank you!

Just great! The rooms are just amazing, the details, cleanliness and beds. Haven't had such a good sleep in a hotel bed for a VERY long time! Love the beddings btw.

Staff was top, the Drake cafe is perfect for an espresso in the morning, lunch snack or a coffee in the afternoon.

The drake is the total opposite to to the big hotel chains like Hilton etc..., in other words a real hotel experience from the beginning to the end! Great job guys!

Btw, we ended up playing Trivia on the outdoor terrace one night, just random and fun! Even though our team didn't win! haha :)

Thank you for a couple of lovely days and I will definitely come back in a soon future!

I hardly wrote trip advisor review though I am heavy user but I need to do this hotel since it is far below my expectation. We stayed at the hotel last week. I have not visited Toronto for 15 years so that I chose this hotel purely by its ranking. The room size is probably the smallest in comparison with all hotel rooms I stayed in last 25 years neglecting its 200 price tag. Its location is not at the major Queens Street and it doesn't have a elevator.

Dear cmfan814,

Thank you for choosing Drake as your escape after a 15 year hiatus from Toronto. I am, however, sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with our room sizing. We are pleased to offer a high level of service to all our guests, regardless of room rates and size, and encourage guests that need a little extra leg room to avail themselves to our competitively priced Dens and Salons.

With regards to elevator and location, the heritage nature of the building precludes us from installing an elevator, however all of our team members are eager to take luggage up to (or down from) the guest rooms to ease check in and check out. As far as our location in the heart of the Queen West neighborhood, we are conveniently located at 2 streetcar stops to access both the downtown core, and the city’ west end. This prime location allows our guests quick access to enjoy all the great shops, galleries and restaurants in the Queen West area.

Warmest Regards,
