“Great Food and Great Music”
Reviewed March 4, 2014

My wife and I have been joined by good friends on two recent occasions at the Jazz Bistro. Each time proved to be a great evening out. The food is delicious, the menu varied, the live music entertaining, the ambience warm, and the staff accommodating. All together, they make for a fine recipe for a nice time out in downtown Toronto.

“Good food, but...”
Reviewed March 3, 2014

The music was great and the food surprisingly delicious; hot, fresh and well prepared. Had the scallops and and risotto myself and everyone in our party loved their meal as well. It would however be a wise investment to match the serving staff to the rest of the quality and atmosphere this establishment has to offer. Our waiter was miserable and surly and may want to consider another line of work. He did not smile or have the slighest inkling of good manners and missed several items our party ordered. No apologies offered, just a sullen grunt. There are great people out there in the hospitality industry with a lot of offer - this person was not one of them. We made the best of it and had a great family celebration in any case, however I would seriously consider replacing this particular employee as he is not an assett but rather a liability to this fine establishment.

“Go for the fries”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

We were looking for a place to watch the Olympic hockey game and happened on the Jazz Bistro. Wow! The food was excellent. It was lunch and I had the chicken sandwich with pealmeal bacon and my husband had the burger. The fries were the best we have ever had- better than Five Guys or Poutines. They had a big screen set up for the game and we were able to both sit on the bench that lines the backwall. Good service, great food, and Canada won. What more could you ask for?

“Shocked and Awed”
Reviewed February 19, 2014 via mobile

The Jazz Bistro is one of those three star places that is also a MUST. It will dazzle you and frustrate you equally. While the frustrations are fixable, they are present.

I recently went to hear Linda Ippolito play piano here. Before she played, a tango quartet played. Both performances were well worth the extra 20$ they added for the cover charge. Drink prices were reasonable for a place that relies on selling drinks.

The challenges were these:

1. The food is good, but nothing to write home about. The lobster pasta was a bit TV dinner-ish. The taste I had of the ribs would've been a much better option. The French onion soup is standard.
2. During Linda's performance you constantly heard the clanging of dishes in the kitchen. The door in an out of the kitchen squeaked continuously (wd 40 would solve this!)
3. During both performances they left the large TV at the bar on. While it was silent, it was still quite bright and created more of a "beer bar" feel than a jazz bistro feel.
4. The place is strictly for sitting and listening. There is no room for dancing or any sort of impromptu fun. The crowd here is more similar to the crowd at the symphony rather than Preservation Hall in New Orleans.
5. Service interruptions were minimal during the performances. It would've been nice if they had formally announced a 20 minute break between shows for people to order food/drinks, go to the restroom, and pay bills. While people did this during the break, you didn't know how much time you had. There is not lots of moving around space in here, so movement during performances is noticeable.

In conclusion, there is some great music here. If you strictly love the music, you can't go wrong. The food is decent, but not special. With some effort, this place can be top notch.
