“Great food but expensive.”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Six of us arrived, having being turned away from Grand Electric only to be welcomed by this very nice restaurant. Same concept. Small eats and great bar drinks. Was introduced to Canadian Gin which was amazing and some really nice treats. They are busy and having to cope but did a good job. The bill for six of us was $550- including a generous tip. Give this place a go but watch the drinks.

“Try everything!”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

Get ready to try everything on the menu. It's ALL good. There is a lot of seafood on their menu which I love but if you aren't there are still some options (for veggies too). I went with a bunch of girlfriends and we sat at the front table and had the best service. We made a reservation, even for a Monday night since it was still busy! Make sure you go!

“A great dinning experience.”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

I have to raise my glass to the two young owners of this place. They have put together a very intimate yet compelling restaurant that has excellent food and a comfortable atmosphere. The servers know the menu well and really care about what you came in for. Seeing the food prepared in front of my very eyes was interesting in that the food seemed simple but I knew it was not easy. I don't know how else to describe the experience. All I know is that everything worked from the drinks that were suggested to the foods that were suggested. The experience was a study in contrast. The restaurant is unpretentious but I can tell alot of thought has gone into just about everything in the restaurant. Highly recommended and best wishes to the two young owners who have achieved so much in their lives.

“First time a charm, second time just okay”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

Queen St. west of Dufferin is finally taking off. This cute little spot is in keeping with the neighbourhood. A little boho, a little funky with aspirations of greatness. The room is typical Toronto - small, long with very few tables. It has a great bar, and one small stovetop out in the open where you watch the chef prepare all of the meals. It has a short but decent wine list.

The first time we went to Chantecler we were very impressed. On the second, we found that they had revamped the menu to focus upon lettuce wrapped entrees. It was disappointing. However, there is so much to like here that I will go back one more time in the hopes that the menu has turned around.

“What an Amazing Dining Experience!”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

We recently had the opportunity to dine at two outstanding restaurants in Toronto, Momofuku Shoto and Chantecler; both boasting tasting menus, both with open kitchens and both offering wine pairings. This is where the similarities end. Momofuku Shoto is one of many top tier restaurants of David Chang’s in the Toronto Shangrila Hotel. Momofuku also has restaurants in New York and Sydney. It is trendy, high class and simply styled with a Japanese fusion cuisine. Chanteceler is a tiny, Bohemian restaurant on Queen street west co-owned by Jacob Wharton-Shukster and the chef, Johathan Poom, serving up progressive Canadian cuisine, which is a fusion of French, Italian, British, and Asisan cuisines. In both restaurants the diners can observe the preparation of the meals. At Momofuku, the process seems mechanically prescribed. The dishes are artistic but not always well balanced. At Chanteclar, the staff is engaged with the customers while the food is being prepared. Everyone, from the servers to the chefs was engaged with us during the meal making us feel their desire for us to have an outstanding dining experience and reflecting on the pride they take in the restaurant. Each dish was outstanding; striped BC prawns with bay scallops, lamb sausage with duck giblets and dungeness crab with red fish are just a few examples of the dishes served up in the tasting menu.
Momofuku’s wine pairings were interesting but the servings were small. They claim they pour two ounces. If they do, you don’t get one milliliter more, whereas Jacob beams with his descriptions of the wines, which were paired beautifully with the food. The servings are generous and on more than one occasion our glasses were topped off when they saw we were running low. There is a general sense of generosity at Chantecler; a wish that team has to give their patrons an unforgettable experience. At the end of our meal Jacob served us a potion of the duck popcorn with a cocktail, neither included in the tasting menu but they had tweaked our interest during our meal. Just one of many gestures that made our dining experience so special. The popcorn is outstanding; what an original creation.
The food at Chantecler was outstanding. It was perhaps the best meal we have ever had in Toronto. The food at Momofuku was good, but not memorable. The price at Momofuku was twice the price of Chantecler, including the price of the wine parings.
Momofuku was an experience that we don't regret but we will not likely return there for another meal. As for Chantecler, we made our next reservation at the end of our meal.
If you are planning a trip to Toronto you must make a reservation for Chantecler but make it well in advance, especially if you want to try the tasting menu. It will be one of your best dining experiences, ever!
