“What a surprise”

On a recent early morning flight home from Pearson International airport in Toronto, we were surprised to see a couple of new restaurants in the departure area. It was a change from the good old Tim Horton stand by.
The first thing you see at the Heirloom Bakery Café is that there are iPads in front of every seat at the counter or the tables.
A very helpful staff member explained the the menu was on the iPads, you scroll through the screens and add the items you want to your 'cart' and when you are finished you send the order. The screen then suggests that you input your flight number and the system will keep you advised of your flight status, boarding times etc,
Within minutes your choices start arriving. As we were there for breakfast time we had just ordered yoghurt and fruit and eggs and toast. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the bacon crisp and the toast still warm. The bakery is obviously popular for takeaways and the small selection of food that we had would suggest that everything is freshly and well prepared.
While you are eating you can surf the web on the iPad and the only thing missing was swiping your card in the iPad and leaving! At our request the staff member arrived at our table to make the transaction.
What a change from the traditional airport food.

The atmosphere here is even worse than the rest of Pearson Airport and the food isn't much better. iPads in the middle of the tables serving as menus make for a very unfriendly environment and separate you from you lunchmates making it difficult to visit.

Staff were friendly but considering there were five on staff, not very attentive.

What a wonderful way to start our vacation... We decided to have our breakfast at the airport before leaving on vacation.. we choose Heirloom Bakery for its convenient location by the gates. It cleanliness and menu options and its comfort level.. Delicious and relaxing. You order from your seat via IPAD's that are provided at the table (for your browsing enjoyment once your order is placed) the food was quick and fabulous.. not run of the mill airport food.. The cappuccinos were great just an all around wonderful experience of relaxation and ease.

Walked past this place towards my gate then decided I needed something good to eat while waiting a few more hours for my flight. What got me to stop was seeing the Ipads on the tables and that every place also had power , so you could plug in to charge a laptop or phone - great idea.
The menu is all on the Ipads and then once your ordered up you can use those same ipads to browse the web. Nice touch.
The menu was easy enough to use and they have a nice selection, service was great , food was as expected, nice flavour , nice serving. Will eat here again next time am flying out of Pearson.

I stopped here with an hour to go before a flight in the food desert that is the Toronto airport. I was lured by the pleasant- and comfortable-looking seats but decided to stay because of the quality of the offerings. They had Steamwhistle beer, which is a bit of a Toronto icon and a regular contributor to good local causes, and they featured Baretta beef; run by an organic producer who basically grew up with the early food movement in southern Ontario. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options, all served on nice plates with nice cutlery by pleasant staff -- what you'd expect in a nice place, not an airport. Prices, however, were airport-like. But, what a nice break to have in the tense preparation of getting on a long flight!
