I spent 5 nights here last week while in Toronto for a conference (my first time to Toronto). The outside of the building immediately sets the tone for what's to come. It has such character and ambiance that it never felt like a traditional hostel. It is right across the street from a nice, small park and its location at the end of a busy street makes it very quiet, yet very convenient to all the city spots. 15 minute walk to the Convention Center and the CN Tower, 15 minute walk to Queens Quay and the Toronto Music Garden. The lovely french bakery/patisserie (right next door) was a great place to start my day with a cup of coffee and fresh baked pastries. The decor was so french and quaint and the music was french so I really felt like I was in France! The dorm room was comfortable (I was in a female 6 bed room with our own bathroom/shower) and I had great roommates that became friends (from England, Ireland and the Netherlands). The lounge areas were very spacious with large screen TVs, kitchen was BEAUTIFUL with long counter for working while eating and watching large screen TV, and BONUS was a lovely roof top terrace. My dorm room actually had a juliet balcony that overlooked the park and the CN Tower to my left. The shower was large and clean and had great water pressure and HOT water--very nice after long days of touring the city.

Room Tip: I was in 10, 2A and had the great view of the park and CN Tower.

Let me start by saying that this is a hostel. That means you won't get the bells and whistles of a hotel - you have to make your bed when you arrive, there's no room service and things are run a bit more casually than your regular chain hotel.

That being said, the Clarence Park is excellent value for money in a city that's full of overpriced accommodation. The private rooms with bathrooms are clean, large and felt recently renovated (the bathroom in particular was impeccable). The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of storage if you're in for a long stay and the TV worked as you'd expect. I was there for a week and while the place felt pretty full, the noise levels were always entirely manageable. An added bonus is the cafe that's part of the hostel complex - not only does it serve great coffee and pastries, it also faces over the very pleasant Clarence Square. Finally, and most importantly, the location is absolutely wonderful. Downtown Toronto is only a couple of minutes away, as is the great shopping on Queen Street.

Overall I would definitely recommend the Clarence Park for a stay in Toronto. One thing to be aware of, though, is that they don't accept credit cards, so make sure you're able to pay in cash or with a debit card.

After reading the reviews listed on Tripadvisor I wasn't sure what to expect form the Clarence Park hostel but what I found was a very pleasant surprise! This hostel has much charm and character and deserves a category of it's own. The room in the 8 bed dorm was nice, clean and the beds very comfortable. The public areas were very nice and very welcoming - including the comfortable and stylish decor of the main shared areas and the kitchen. The cafe adjoint to the hostel "Le Cafe Neuf" is also very lovely and the food good! Very enjoyable stay and highly recommended.

Let me start by saying that once you walk in that place, you do get the feeling that it needs to be clean. It smells and there is a dog with flies, it is terrible. I only stayed one night there, the sheets were dirty, the room smelled and besides I had to make my own bed, they didn't even made the bed or had the room ready when I got there at 10pm. Terrible!!
I do have to say the bed was comfortable or perhaps I was just really tired.
For $90 per night, there are far better places than that. I can't imagine what the dorms are like.
All in all, I think the guy in the front desk is unfriendly and for that price you can find cleaner, friendlier, with a gym, a pool etc in the same location.

The best of that place is the cafe next door, they do have great coffee and chocolate croissants.

Dear J C,

Based on the information in your review, we're quite certain that you're confusing us with another facility. We've had no guest with the initials J C stay with us in the month of March or February.

Rest assured that our staff is always friendly, and we keep the facilities clean and tidy.

The hostel itself was beautifully decorated. The kitchen and common room areas were immaculate. I thought I must have been in wrong place to begin with as it was so lovely! I stayed in an 8 bed dorm which was really spacious and each bunk had it's own reading light, privacy curtains etc. There weren't any lockers in rooms though, which was disappointing. The owner is a little eccentric but very friendly and entertaining! It's an extremely quiet place to stay as people tend to stay here on a much longer term basis. Overall, a really nice little place to stay.
