“A neighborhood away from home”
Reviewed September 12, 2005

Most of downtown Toronto was already booked up when I started searching for a room for a five-night stay during the Toronto International Film Festival. Victoria's Mansion caught my eye because of its price and location, and got me because they had one room left. It was a simple room: a double bed, TV, clock radio, coffee pot, microwave and some kitchenware. The rooms do have private bathrooms. Mine only had a shower, which was fine by me but may be an issue for some folks. One thing they need to change on their website is advertising dial-up internet capability. No more. They do have wireless internet, which works very well, but the phone system no longer allows dial up. The property itself is located on a fairly quiet, neighborhoody street. But you walk up to the corner of Gloucester and Yonge and it's like, "Whoa! Manhattan!" If your business is in the hustle and bustle, VM serves as a nice escape. There are serveral good restaurants of various styles and flairs at the end of the block, and you're minutes from most everything downtown via foot or the Wellesley subway station. The staff is nice and helpful, but mostly stays out of your way. It's like having a short-term studio apartment. I booked at Victoria's Mansion because they seemed to be my only option. But even if my options were wide open, I'd stay there again.

We booked two nights ahead of time at Victoria's Mansion as part of a road trip we were taking through Ontario. The room was clean and reasonably comfortable, though some of the facilities (e.g. the television -- invaluable for weather forecasts) did not work. We reported these problems but they were not fixed during our stay.

We very much enjoyed Toronto, and decided to stay at Victoria's another night, since all of our belongings were already there. When we went to depart Toronto the morning after our third night we discovered that a rock had been thrown through our car window. (The car was parked in the hotel's small private lot in back of the building.) With the window smashed and glass all over the inside of the vehicle, we needed to get it fixed before we could continue on our trip. We went back inside the hotel to ask for a yellow pages to look up a glass repair shop.

Although they lent us the phone book, the hotel staff then gave us a lecture about how the broken window was our fault because we had left items in the back seat. (This was obviously not the case because although the window was broken in, nothing was stolen from the car -- it seemed purely an act of vandalism.) In the course of this lecture it came out that the window had actually been broken the afternoon before (we hadn't been out to the car since the previous morning), and that the hotel staff had known about the smashed window since shortly after it happened but hadn't seen fit to inform us about it. After the lecture they then inexplicably accused us of not paying for the third night of our stay, until we offered to dig out the charge card receipt as proof. (We had paid for the third night on our second day, immediately after being told the room was available for an additional night.)

We don't hold the Victoria's Mansion staff responsible for the vandalism, but them deciding not to inform us of the problem meant that 1: anything in the car could have been stolen, since the broken window sat unfixed for a day, 2: the car sat open to the rain (it was raining later the afternoon the window was broken), and 3: we had to delay our departure and sit around in the parking lot by the car for hours waiting for a repair truck to come out, instead of having the window fixed the day before. (Did I mention that after lecturing us and questioning whether we had paid our bill the staff for unknown reasons locked us out of the building??) Their baffling accusation of us not paying and them offering no assistance or even shelter while we dealt with the problem just made a bad situation even worse.

We're pretty considerate guests, and left the room neat and were very polite to them throughout our stay (even after receiving the lecture), but their behavior stands out as one of the worst experiences we've ever had with a hotel over many years of travel. Please, do yourself a favor and avoid this place.

We stayed for 4 nights on the way back from Chicago in May 2004, booked through the web. Its a large victorian house in a quiet street in the gay district. Straight or gay the location is fine, a vibrant area with many good restaurants & breakfast stops within a minute or two of leisurely strole and loads to see & do. But Vic Mansion is one of the most bizarre of places. We were greeted by appointment, given the keys and that is the last we saw of anybody (guests or staff) at Vic.M. The room was basic but had everything.
