I have had truly inspired meals here and then gone back with friends excited to introduce them to this place and eaten really disappointing, overpriced food. I have eaten her four times and it's an even split, but when you are putting out 160$ for a meal for 2 you don't want to risk it.

Union is another great new restaurant in the trendy Ossington area of Toronto. The cuisine is original, local and delicious. The atmosphere is also great. Monday's are half price wine night - a unique offering for those who enjoy wine with their meal but not necessarily the high price of bottle in this city. The elk sliders are the best I have ever enjoyed. The oysters are fresh and tasty and the sticky ribs are the highlight of the entree's.

The stated concept of this restaurant is to focus on locally sourced food, but on our first visit the menu showed no shortage of diversity or originality. Everything we ordered ranged from good to outstanding, with no disappointing dishes. The beef tartare appetiser had a finely-ground texture that made a pleasant change from the usual, while the elk striploin main course was tender and juicy. Don't overlook the mushroom pasta dish if this is offered on your visit (the menu changes based on the market), as this is a true flavour explosion!

The wine list, while not extensive, was eclectic and thoughtfully chosen. We especially enjoyed the Tokay wine we ordered as a digestif.

The Friday-night atmosphere was casual, festive, and LOUD; the long, narrow restaurant has nothing but hard surfaces, so guests' conversations reverberate. Had we been seeking a quiet, romantic dinner we would have been disappointed, but as this was a late dinner after a bumpy flight into Toronto we found that the energy of the room was perfect for perking us up.

Despite being very busy with a packed house, our waitress was attentive and helpful with suggestions. We were glad we took her advice on ordering the ginger cake, which she said was a customer favourite; we saw why, as this was out of this world (and very filling; one serving would easily serve a couple).

I reserve five stars for a tiny number of exceptional restaurants, but Union 72 ranks high among those I've given four stars, and I would recommend it to even very demanding foodies.

We finally made it to Union for dinner after hearing great reviews for ages. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful; they were happy to answer any questions. We were there on a Thursday night and the place was packed - great scene.

We ordered the Elk Sliders (delicious!!!!) and split the Cote de Boeuf (also amazing). Highly recommend both. I plan on returning soon.

Coming in from out of town for a day of shopping and so many dining options in Toronto we decided on something hip and trendy on the Queen West/Ossington strip. After seeing some reviews on this site UNION was the pick. Great choice!

We made a reservation for a Saturday night at the chef’s table. It’s basically a semi-circular bar that overlooks the kitchen that seats six. Only minor complaint is the lack of legroom. The chef and staff were very friendly, engaging and interact with the patrons. We had a first hand look of amazing meals being prepared, were able to ask questions and helped us decide on our dinner.

We thoroughly enjoyed the following:

Union Salad: Probably the best salad I have ever eaten. $12
Fall soup: Very hearty. Delicious. $10
Trout and Pickerel: Wife says it was great. $26
Sticky Ribs: After watching a few of these plates go out I had to try them. Amazing. Accompanied by a large portion of delicious vegetables and fries. $27

Toss in a few drinks and the total was $93 + tax + tip

Wine list was great and favourably priced. Cocktail list needs some help. Had one of my favourite beers on tap. Stiegl.

This is a small, unpretentious restaurant with the focus on farm to chef to table food. Apparently the head chef/owner butchers his own meats. Very reasonably priced. Large portions. Great service. Debit/interact machine was down. Thankfully we had cash.

Will definitely return.
