A lot to be desired

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 10, 2011
Breakfast at TOCA is unsatisfactory
1. Table arrangement is uncomfortable.
2. Table utensils look modern, but are not user friendly.
3. Music is loud and distracting for that hour of the day.
4. Menu is a la carte, ends up with a bill of between $40/person, food quality is fair and non inspiring.

Reception is not great during checking out.
1. The receptionist said she would e mail the bill to our address and it would seem reasonable. When asked for a hard copy to look through, I detected  several errors which were double charges for the Internet and phone items. Suggest you check your bill and not to allow her to say we will e mail the bill to your account.

Location of this hotel is poor in relation to The Four Seasons with no shops and restaurants unless one walks for a distance.

This hotel cannot be recommended for those traveling for leisure

This hotel is top notch luxurious. We book for a corner unit with a CN Tower view and we were pampered traveling as a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children). If you are looking to pamper yourself and your companions this is one of the hotels in Toronto.

Nice hotel features: (this hotel has a long list of great features but I'm just going to name a few that matters to us)
> Big corner room with everything modern. Including the coffee machine!
> Valet parking for a flat fee with unlimited ins and outs.
Two Bose sound units in our corner room. Give us a great listening pleasure.
> Built-in TV in the washroom (best washroom we have come across from all the hotels we have stayed ).
> Flat rate internet fee for unlimited devices (we have 2 laptops, 2 blackberrys and 3 iPads all getting strong wireless Internet signal).
> Fitness room that's open 24hours
> Spa service that will spoil you

Not-so-nice features: (something we wish it could have or do better)
> Breakfast doesn't come as buffet. (we were hoping for a Sangri-la hotel's style buffet which we have tried while staying in Taipei). All we get is a plain ala cart breakfast and nothing interesting for our kids.
> Pull out sofa bed has metal edges which are unsafe for little kids. This could have been fix with some sort of covering to cushion the metal.

Stayed here for 3 nights on our first trip to Toronto. We chose this hotel as it was featured as a special offer when we booked our flights with BA to get 3 nights for the price of 2.

We expected luxury and the hotel did not disappoint with the advantage of everything being brand new. The rooms are very spacious with a separate bar area, large desk and sitting area. The real wow factor though is the amazing bathroom with a 'hidden' tv screen in the mirror, large bathtub & separate walk in shower.

We didn't try the restaurant but there is a great outdoor terrace at the back of the bar where they serve light meals and snacks which were very tasty.
All in all an amazing experience and a great opportunity to sample this luxury at an affordable price!

When my husband and I decided to stay over in Toronto for 2 days on our way back from western Ontario, I was very excited to find out about the new Ritz, especially since I could use my Marriott Rewards points to pay for the stay. The hotel is impeccable, beautifully decorated and the service is fabulous. When we arrived our room wasn't quite ready, so we were personally escorted to the DEQ for a late lunch, and assured that our key would be brought to us as soon as the room was ready. DEQ is a wonderful outdoor oasis in midst of the city with an informal bar and dining area). We had a great lunch (the Turkey Meatball Sliders recommended by our waiter were scrumptious) and within 30 minutes our key was presented to us. We declined being escorted to our room, which was offered.
When we did get to our room, our luggage was set and ready to be unpacked. We had a standard king room on the 16th floor with a city view. The room was quite large with a huge closet, a terrific first class mini-bar (well actually there was nothing mini about it right down to the martini glasses and olives), plenty of drawer space so that we could really unpack, and a very comfortable bed.
The bathroom was quite large with a big walk in shower, tub, double sink and separate enclosure for the toilet. The best feature, however, was the magic TV that appeared in the middle of the mirror with a touch of the remote. My only complaint is that the lighting is not good for putting on makeup or shaving. Hard to believe that Ritz missed on that.
The Concierge was very helpful to us on several occasions, and all of the staff were extremely friendly.
We ate breakfast both mornings at TOCA, and they definitely have some of the best Eggs Benedict that I have ever eaten. We did have dinner at TOCA one evening as well, and unfortunately, that was not as terrific - not bad, but just not worth the exorbitant price (details in a separate review). The TOCA bar on the first floor is a fun place to hang out, and Moses, who runs the bar scene, is a treasure and a lot of fun.
All in all, the Ritz is definitely on my short list of favorite "in city" hotels.

Awesome hotel: location, clean, well appointed guest rooms, etc. You can read all the others and get that. Here is what made it an EXPERIENCE for my wife and 2 year old.

Put in a 10am Saturday morning requested arrival. I didn't expect to get it, I had planned accordingly. I arrived at 11am, the attentive valet attendants opened both car doors for us, loaded up a bellcart, entertained my 2 year old while I told him what stays and goes from the trunk. He must have saw me put my daughters DVD player in the seat pocket, which you will read about later.

Walked into the lobby and proceeded to check in with Aarti. She let me know she saw the request and that they were fully committed last night and didn't have a room ready yet (huge political figure funeral across the street made that pretty obvious, roads blocked, etc). She asked what our plans were for the day, in the mean time, the front desk manager (assume ?) came over with a stuffed Ritz Toronto Moose for my daughter.

Aarti and I discussed Buskerfest, festival we came into town for, as well as some other things to do on the way. She said she was sorry and would get a couple housekeepers in a room and rush it, I said no worries, we will be gone for the day. She upgraded me to a city view room, up on 16 I think. What a great view, nice large room.

Next day, at checkout, I told her I had left all of my bags in the room and asked to have a bellman run them to my car because we are leaving to sightsee again and will get the car from valet later in the day. She said that she was looking thru the paper and recognized my daughter in a picture. She emailed me the link and said the hotel didn't carry that paper but she was sending a bellman to get one for us. We came for our car that afternoon, all loaded up, DVD player put up and powered on, waters in the car, nice hand written letter from Aarti clipped to the newspaper on my front seat. Awesome service!

I have no complaints about the stay. My daughter played in the soaker tub and watched cartoons on the TV built into that bathroom mirror while we took turns showering, it was that relaxing of a stay. I wish I brought her bubbles, we usually don't give her the baths on a 1 night stay.

Can't comment on the fitness center or restaurants unfortunately. Room was super clean and well appointed. Shoe horn, tie rack, lint brush, great minibar/martini/snack selection, bose ipod dock, blueray player, nice TV.

Aarti, the doorman and valet where on when we can and left and were very spot on about details that we shared. They made us feel that it was at a personal level and they really enjoyed us and our excitement for their city. I have stayed at a number of Ritz Carlton hotels as well as Luxury Boutiques, I understand the level of luxury service and this was above the norm.

Thanks to all!

I want to start seeing wifi TVs in the new luxury hotels tho. Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Youtube.

I quite liked a lot about the hotel, but at about $400 a night I don't think it was worth it. The service was very attentive, but sometimes overly so - a bit self-conscious and fussy. My room was nearly perfect - nice desk and sitting area. But the sliding bathroom door kept bouncing back when I tried to close it, and we could always hear the howling wind through the shower vent. These are little flaws, but for this price I expect perfection. And finally, I thought the decor in the lobby and common areas was garish. To me, the Ritz-Carlton brand should mean timeless elegance and glamour, but they've bought into every current design fad on this one. It will look embarassing in a few years!
