“Clean, Average Hotel”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

The Holiday Inn Downtown Centre is in a commercial building with access through a relatively narrow passage which initially is not readily recognisable as the entrance to the hotel. An alternate access nearby is similarly hard to distinguish. Once you get inside, however, the lobby is quite reasonable and the reception staff welcoming. Check in was quick and efficient and all information regarding our booking was correctly prepared in advance.

The room was clean and well appointed, the bed and pillows were very comfortable and there was no problems in sleeping. Little or no noise from adjoining rooms and the corridor. All much as would be expected of a Holiday Inn.

The breakfast menu was adequate with a sufficient selection of the various breakfast dishes and service was attentive and efficient. However it was a little uninspiring so we chose to take breakfast outside. The restaurant is fairly devoid of character and more like a cafe we decided to eat elsewhere. There is a bar and lounge adjacent to the entrance which also has little character and does not inspire and offers a snacks menu that is very ordinary.

The location is quite convenient and most of the city attractions are within a reasonable walking distance of the hotel

It's a pleasure to write a review for the Holiday Inn and Toronto. From the time of our arrival to departure the staff were always welcoming and ready to assist. A special mention to Sharon in the bar for organising meals at a late hour along with relaxing surroundings and some nice wine. Toronto and the people were an extra special break in our holiday of Canada and USA.

Room Tip: Near the top floor and away from elevators

This was a nice, standard Holiday Inn Express. We only stayed one night, Sept 13th, but everything went well. The staff was very nice, parking was fairly easy, at $25 per night, and the rooms, though being a little smaller in an Express hotel, were very clean. The neighbourhood was great for walking around and great proximity to a liquor store, supermarket, and more. All was well. We would stay here again.

Great hotel very well decorated and comfortable. We stayed here during Toronto pride and as busy and wild as the hotel was inside our room was quiet and comfortable. Location was perfect everything you could possibly need was right around the corner! Excellent hotel we will be back!

We stayed in room 920 for three nights and paid the Holiday Inn web site prices of 199 $ per night plus tax for a standard room with a single King size bed. The room has been completely updated in the very best materials and fabrics. There is a small refrigerator, safe and closet with drawers. The bathroom has granite, glass and high end tiles. The very best thing about this hotel is the location. It is in the centre of downtown Toronto and there is a subway entrance at the end of the block. The safe area is filled with a wide variety of restaurants, shops and services to suit all needs. It is only two blocks from the well known Church street gay area.

Many readers will notice that the common complaint about this hotel is that the rooms are small. This observation is not without merit. The rooms are small I have seen and stayed in similar rooms in London UK, New York, and Vancouver. It is just a function of an expensive real estate market in major popular tourist spots. There are problems though with the room which could be fixed. The TV is placed to the right side of the bed. It should be wall mounted at the end of the bed. I actually got a creek in the neck trying to watch a movie in bed. There is no hook on the back door of the bathroom door. The bathroom has virtually no shelf space. One mirror over the sink should be removed and shelves inserted. When the room in very small good design is not enough we need the best in design and function.

Service from staff was mixed. The bell hop staff on one occasion gave us attitude, and another time bad directions. The front desk staff had a great check in process complete with a map, bottled water, chocolate and a brief description of the hotel and services. For the record some of these things are only given to “Priority Point” member, the Holiday Inn loyalty programme. We asked one front desk staffer if we could have an extended checkout – he said the best he could do is 12:30. We said we would think about it and later asked another front desk staffer and was told that 2 PM would be no problem. In fairness, late check-outs times are based on availability of and demand for rooms. Perhaps the situation changed between our two requests. The rooms are exceptionally clean and the housekeeping staff work hard.
Other reviewers have mentioned fire alarms. We had one during our stay. It rang for about 5 minutes. However we heard from other guests that on the 4, 5, and 6th floors that one night the alarm went for “hours”. We did not hear it but this is what they said and obviously they were not pleased. Considering the number of comments about fire alarms at this hotel there does appear to be a foundation for these complaints. We did not use the gym area, hotel coffee shop or bar and cannot comment on those aspects of the hotel although the coffee shop and bar both were always busy when we went by them. There is a large comfortable lobby complete with lots of plug-ins for your portable appliances.

We would stay at this hotel again and pay the same price range. I recommend it with the caution that the rooms are small and there may be fire alarm problems.

Room Tip: Ask about room size if that is important to you.

As a transplanted Torontonian currently living in Europe for my job, I rarely play tourist in my own city. But when I found myself in town and in need of a room for three nights, this hotel's good rates and central location convinced me to give it a try. I'm not sorry for a number of reasons. The room was clean, contained two double beds, a desk and a sleek shower. The WiFi was free and fast and you'll get a free Globe and Mail newspaper in the morning, too. The central location makes it easy to get everywhere, either by subway, streetcar or on foot, and it's surrounded by everything you'll need. For breakfast, try Cora's across the street. You'll enjoy a hearty breakfast (crepes and omelettes are a specialty) with ample fresh fruit. Line ups move fast, so don't be intimidated on weekends and don't miss the free maple sugar fudge at the cash on the way out. There's a movie theatre right next door to the hotel (get $5 tickets on Tuesday). And if you're not familiar with Joe Fresh (an inexpensive Canadian clothing brand) you can find an outlet (along with an LCBO) in the new Loblaw's at the corner of Carlton and Church. You can also stock up your empty hotel room bar fridge with snacks for your stay. What made the hotel even better in my eyes was the service I received AFTER my stay. I realized after checking out that I'd left a necklace in the bathroom. When I called, I got a terrifically friendly and efficient employee on the phone. Joe contacted housekeeping, secured the necklace, and made sure it was safely in the manager's care to be picked up by me. I'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Many rooms on higher floors, facing Carlton, have views of the CN Tower.

The hotel is clean and in a good location. The front desk staff and concierge were very nice and helpful. Nothing fancy here but if you're just looking for a clean, nice place to sleep and shower this is it. I only rated the sleep quality as average because the mattress in our room was firm - great for my husband but I prefer a softer bed.

Room Tip: We were on the 11th floor and heard nothing from the lobby and bar areas.
