“Strathcona Hotel”
Reviewed July 24, 2007

We stayed one night at this hotel at the end of our 14 night vacation around Eastern Canada. The good points about this hotel are its excellent location, just around corner from Union Station and a 10 minute walk to CN tower, Blue Jays Stadium, Harbour front etc, 20 minutes walk to Eaton Centre. Good restaurants nearby especially Armadillos Tex-Mex on Front Street. Staff are very friendly and helpful particularly Alex the concierge. We asked for a late check-out and our stay was extended to 2pm, baggage was stored for us after this time until we returned in the evening to collect on our way to the airport. Valuables can be stored in a safe deposit box in the hotel office and our laptop was also kept safe overnight. Bed and bathroom were both very clean.

Negative aspects for us were the room was on the small side however given the price we paid we were very happy with the overall package and would recommend this hotel for a short stay in Toronto.

The Strathcona was our base for 3 nights in Toronto. The first room they showed us was a tiny double room with no space to hang our clothes up. We fortunately had booked a twin room which was a bit bigger with a good sized wardrobe. The room was clean and the bathroom and shower were good.
However you could not see the sky no matter how hard you tried and the windows were covered in louvered shutters which made the room gloomy and claustrophobic. If there had been good lighting this would have dispelled the gloom but it was very subdued lighting which did not. It was a room for sleeping and washing in, not really comfortable.

The air conditioning was draughty and the noise was like a jet engine when turned on and if you left it off you could hear all the other AC units in the well of walls that faced you on all sides. Take your own kettle as the coffee machine took hours to get lukewarm

The hotel did a breakfast buffet but everything felt small poor quality and penny pinching. It was like a dolls house breakfast. They did not quickly refill used up items. However we tried to buy a cooked breakfast in the shopping mall opposite and I ended up with a MacDonald’s ‘hearty’ breakfast of folded square eggs !! that was salty and unappetising. If you could eat wheat Timmy Horton’s opposite the hotel was popular with others.

Toronto is a great city and the open topped touring bus was a great way to get photos. The CN tower is magnificent and we had a meal in the 360 revolving restaurant that was excellent. I have never tasted steak like it. The views were stunning.

We took a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls and also went on the Maid of the Mist. Enjoyed both very much. We visited Niagara on Lake and loved the little clapper board houses and the Main Street. Visited Ottawa but not impressed, mind you it was grey and raining which possible did not help.

We went onto Montreal see my review of the Meridian Versailles Hotel.
I have prepared a slide show of our week long trip which I can email in a few seconds if anyone is interested.

The hotel was not cheap - almost 200 Canadian dollars (including tax and a buffet breakfast) per night for a standard room.

We were shocked by the so-called "standard" room. It was tiny: to do some ironing on the ironing board, or to have access to the electric power points, one literally had to move the furniture around. Cupboard space was inadequate. The shower was lukewarm.

The only redeeming featrure was the location: not in an attractive part of Toronto, but at least within walking distance of the CN Tower and the main railway station.

I thought it was exceptionally bad value for money, and would not recommend it.

We went at the end of May / early June 07 and it was perfect for our 4 night stay. We were having a city break in Toronto and looking to do all the sightseeing / shopping we could do. The Strathcona was perfect for this. We didn't spend a huge amount of time in the hotel but it was a perfect location.

You are very close (within 10 min walk) of the CN Tower, Rogers Centre (Skydome), Union Station, Hop-on/off bus tour stop and another 5 minutes to the harbour front. There are lots of bars and restaurants within a short distance especially along King St West.

The hotel staff seemed pleasant enough and we had new towels every day. The rooms were pretty modern too.

I would also recommend making a trip to the Distillery District - lots of little shops and also the Mill Street Brewery has some excellent beers and food.

We originally had booked a room at the Strathcona, but after reading the reviews, we changed to another hotel.

We did, however, go to the Strathcona to check it out. The hotel clerk let us see a room. It very very nice. I would definitely have stayed there.

Hotel is in a good location downtown near to the attractions.

The rooms are tiny no room to hang anything, we had a room which faced another part of the hotel and we could not tell what time of the day it was.

The pub downstairs served nice food and the staff were friendly, more than i can say for the lady who checked us in, although the gentleman who checked us out was helpful. The York cafe not that great for breakfast, go across the road to Tim Hortons, for coffee/tea.
