We arrived at the hotel at 11:30 PM and we were told our room was given away earlier! So the only part of this hotel I've seen is the lobby - it's nice!
My credit card had expired in between booking the room and actually arriving - so instead of contacting me they just gave the room away!
At nearly midnight my son and I had to negotiate the subway system (we are from small town Saskatchewan) and find another hotel! The only good thing I can say is that the young man who waited on us at the hotel was very kind and helpful and found another place for us to stay and also explained the best he could, how to get there using the subway system!

Room Tip: Check the date on your credit card before using it to book a hotel room. And find a hotel that will...

Hi Wendy,

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave us your review.

Though I am pleased to hear you found our lobby nice, and our staff helpful, I am certainly sorry to hear of your experience with us.

I have sent you a direct message so I can further investigate this situation. It is not customary for the hotel to reallocate room based on the expiry date, so I would like to look into this further for training purposes.

I look forward to your reply.

If taking the train to Toronto, the Strathcona Hotel is the obvious choice...The hotel is a sixty second walk from Union station...The desk staff are courteous and helpful..Rooms can be small but are always clean..The beds are comfortable...Even with the massive (seemingly never ending) construction right in front, the rooms are quiet...Subway stops are minutes away..Either Union or St. Andrew stations will get you anywhere you want to go...Walk in minutes to the Lightbox, Eaton Square, the Roger's Centre or the ACC..Enter the PATH within seconds...A convenience store and a Tim Horton's right across the street...By Toronto standards this place is a bargain!

I visit Toronto regularly for medical appointments. The Strathcona is perfectly located (across the street from the high-rent hotel), the right price, has very clean, very comfortable, thoughtfully designed rooms, and extremely nice staff. What more could I want? If you are looking for luxury, fawning service, and posh little bottles of shampoo and fancy furniture, you'd better check in across the road. I much prefer the straightforward good value of the Strathcona.

Room Tip: If daylight and a view is important to you, ask for one that doesn't face the interior courtyard...

Hello Vizslam0m,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your review!

I'm happy to hear you found your stay comfortable, with all the necessities.

Next time you stay with us, just remind us you prefer a room facing York Street for more sunlight/view.

We look forward to having you stay with us again in the near future!

construction material in front of building-couldn't pull up and unload luggage
Parking a big hassle-once you go under ground and drive around forever to find a spot, you have to come to the surface a block or two away from the hotel (with your luggage)and have to find the hotel, again.
WIFI-they charge for wifi-hardly ever see that any more. In the heart of the business district you would think ......
nice, small European style room, but we had to move a desk to get the controls for the A/C
Staff didn't seem to care if we had a problem or not. Not very helpful. We wanted to book a room for a few nights for TIFF but the front desk wasn't much help in trying to work something out for us.

Great location but room a little on the small side. Coffee maker was only a single cup for a twin room and no work room for using a laptop or tablet and nowhere to sit other than on the bed. Spacious wardrobe and nice bathroom. Nice wall mounted TV. Nearby works are being carried out but could not be heard from the room which did not have any view other than walls and other windows in a square. Great for access to the underground PATH network which could be accessed via the Fairmont Royal York Hotel which was nearby.

Hi Taylor_SE,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your review. They are always very much appreciated.

When travelling back to the area, please know we do have larger rooms, with a working desk area and more space. Though the room you were in is one those that are light sleepers tend to prefer, we do also have rooms with a view. (Tip: Be sure to ask for a room facing York Street for a view. Also, the larger executive rooms are on floors 8-12, which helps with the view as well!)

Thank you again for your review, and we hope to welcome you back to The Strathcona Hotel Downtown Toronto very soon!

We spent only a few hours in this hotel. Whatever service we received during this short stay was considered excellent. We chose the hotel mainly for the downtown convenience; the choice was justified as all essential destination points were quite close saving us time. The room was found to be very compact, but all basic facilities were provided and suitably placed in the small accommodation. The reception lobby was too small, but the reception service was fairly quick and smooth. Because of construction, the access was a bit complicated. Overall we liked our stay and enjoyed the comforts.

Hi Schanbis,

Thank you for your review.

I am very pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and found that all the necessities were provided.

If ever looking for a more spacious option, we do have Executive Rooms, as well as a gorgeous Suite, which is very spacious.

Though the access is slightly compromised at the moment, the long term plans will make it worth it! It will be beautiful once complete! And thankfully, it has not been too much of a challenge for us up to this point. (Tip: Check out our website for Direction/Parking information).

Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you again!

This hotel reminds me of the European Ibis chain. Very small rooms, very neutral décor, very handy location for downtown and all mod cons. Our twin-bedded room - the cheapest, for some reason - had a good flat screen TV mounted on the wall, a coffee maker, a bowed shower curtain rod so that the wet curtain didn't 'suck in' when one was showering, and very comfortable beds. Good sized closet too so that we could stow our suitcase in there. On our return from the theatre we appreciated the coffee machine in the lobby which for a reasonable price offered decent lattes. Only minor problem was the construction outside. We will certainly use it again on trips to Toronto.
