Owner description: Mackenzie House is the restored home of William Lyon Mackenzie, Toronto's first Mayor, a radical journalist and publisher, and leader of the Rebellion of 1837 in Upper Canada. This house was given to Mackenzie by friends and supporters, when he retired from public life, and in recognition of his many years of serving the community. Mackenzie House is one of 10 historic museums operated by the City of Toronto. Toronto's Historic Sites engage visitors, inspire passion, challenge ideas and connect the past to the present.

“Enthusiastic & knowledgeable staff”

Had a lot of fun at this historic museum. The staff were really enthusiastic and knowledgeable. They had lots of stories about the Mackenzie family and were open to quesitons throughout the tour. It is not as big or luxurious as Casa Loma, but my partner and I were entertained the whole time and learned a lot about Toronto's settler history.

“A Great Place to Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2013

If you want learn about the history of newspaper printing, this is the place. I was here with my grandson today, and he had the chance to actually use the printing machines. Mr MacKenzie was the first mayor of Toronto and the tour of his home was a great place to learn Canadian history. We sampled cider and cookies there and really enjoyed our.visit.

“Interesting site - wonderful staff”

An interesting way to learn a bit about Toronto and one of its famous citizens. A great staff who not only knew about their subject but obviously love history and their city. The tour includes not only the home but also a print shop which was very interesting.

“Fantastic Historical Site”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

The people who run this place are absolute delights! They are so knowledgeable and friendly, willing to explain the whole history behind the Mackenzie House, and also answer any questions you have!

We had such a great conversation, and learned so much about the history here.

If I were to go back to Toronto, I would be HAPPY to go here again.

-PS- you even learn how the first newspapers were printed! :D awesome!!

“Quite a Good Time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013

We were drawn in by the allure of a rebel, and honestly expected more information about Mackenzie himself, but this tour is really a lot more about his house and his occupation as a journalist. You can take a short walk through his house learning about the various facets of life during this time, and about news during the era of the printing press. We enjoyed it, but honestly nothing was special about this attraction. The staff really brought the quality up as they seemed to genuinely care about the history and importance of the house, stepping beyond the role of tour guide and sharing any and all knowledge they had. they were all so friendly and helpful. the history of the city came up, and the tour guide even explained things to us unrelated to the Mackenzie house just because we were interested. We had a great evening.
