“Great atmosphere and good food”
Reviewed April 1, 2013 via mobile

We went for dinner on Sunday night and waited two hrs for a table...unfortunately they don't take reservations on the wkend, I believe. Anyway I'd heard great things so we chose to wait. We took our friends from overseas and the moment we entered, we were greeted by a loud cheer from staff and patrons. We had the seafood and veg options, which were really good and we loved that it was tapas style because we got to try so many different menu items. My top dishes were the agadashi tofu and the blackened cod...yum! Dessert was good too, never tried sweet tofu but the almond tofu was surprisingly pleasant. This is a great place to go with company if your looking for something lively. It might be abit loud at times, but its also very inviting. Great value for money too and reasonable for what you get.

“Friendly welcome and great Japan Inspired Food”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

Bring a smile to this downtown eatery, you will be greeted by all staff on entry with a loud cheer and the service stays this friendly and helpful throughout. Although clearly a fav with the business crowd we went there with our 9 yr old and she was made to feel right at home.

The Japanese inspired menu is small but poerfeclty formed. Light miso soup, a selection of pickles come with each main. We had the luch menu which featured two types of ramen noodle soup, a meatloaf style dish and amongst a few other items a shashumi dish.

The ramen noodle dish is a massive undertaking as the bowls are big. One features two large on the bone pieces of meat, the other has slices of pork. Both are flavourful with lots of veg and noodles. The meatloaf dish presents an alternative for those not so into japanese food. It was meaty without being fatty and had a lovely sauce with veg on the side. The shashumi was edible art, the freshest pieces of seafood on sushi rice topped with glowing red roe. It was the freshest and tastiest shashumi I have had in years.

Desserts are limited but all were nice and not to large. The cheesecake changes daily the day we went it was custard - which is similiar to a very cakelike polish cheesecake i used ot get in Bloor West Village. The black seasame seed ice cream is black, but tastes like fresh chesnuts - my daughter liked it even though she was a bit surprised when it arrived at the colour. I had the almond tofu which was like the lightest smoothest pudding with a nice level of almond taste.

Service was extra polite although when it got busy they struggled a bit. The waiter was veyr helpful informing us on dishes etc and owuld not hesitate to reocmmend this place to anyone. No where inToronto is cheap to eat but dinner for three adults and one child came to $97 Canadian.

“fabulous athmosphere”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

I LOVE GUU! I could go there every week. I have never had anything I did not like, and it is impossible to not be in a happy mood in there. The athmosphere is so uplifting and buzzing.
As long as you are cool with sharing a long table with strangers, you should not hesitate to give it a try ::)

“Domo arigato”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

Went for lunch, good thing to know is that they have a different lunch menu which is much smaller. I had the ramen noodles, pretty good broth, too bad the noodles are not made in house but very tasty. The total was $12.50 with a green tea, tax and tip so pretty reasonable. If you park at the loblaws and spend $20 there you get free parking for 90 min at 60 Carlton a 2 min walk, but shop after, $4 each additional half hour. I love how they welcome you, and see you off a nice touch that definitely makes you feel noticed, overall it was a good experience and they have very clean washrooms. Adios amigos!

“Guu...Buu”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

Guu is more than just food, this is the kind of restaurant were you can grip on a truly different experience.

As you walk through the doors, you will be greeted loudly by a very energetic staff making you feel important and noticed. They greet you with "irasshaimase", which is welcome / come in, in Japanese.

Guu is always packed, so expect a bit of waiting, but since it's downtown just go for a walk and they will call you back.

Try the grilled avocado and prawn topped with mayo and panko crust.

The food is good, don't expect a gourmet experience, but the atmosphere is plain happiness, so be prepared for a loud and energetic environment.

A minus for us was the tables, I don't mind sharing tables with strangers, but they pack too many people on each table and it gets a bit crowded for my tasting.

Overall a good experience.
