Guu is so much fun! A lot of people seem to either LOVE or HATE the place, but do try it at least once, just for the atmosphere. They greet you like a celebrity in Japanese when you enter and the energetic vibe throughout the meal just adds to your Izakaya dining experience. It's quite infectious! As for the food, I thought it was pretty good. Their sashimi was very fresh, I'm assuming due to the high turnover, especially their BC Tuna...it was sooooo melt in your mouth guuuuuud! All the dishes are tapas style and average about $5-$10 each, so best to gather up a group of friends and go nuts! It does get very busy & loud so either go early or late to avoid the lineup.

“Popular spot with great vibe but watch the service!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2012

Guu has two locations in Toronto - the original restaurant on Granby Street near College and Church Streets and the second near Bloor and Bathurst. The Bloor stree location has a wonderful tatami mat room which is ideal for families with small children. When full, both restaurants are so loud that a child crying doesn't even register. Both great restaurants if you are looking for true Japanese izakaya-style food.

Be sure to check out the specials which change fairly often for inventive and interesting dishes. The chicken karage is a personal favourite and there is an extensive selection of drinks including chuhai - a distilled rice liquor (like vodka) mixed with fruit cordials.

And while the ambience and food are outstanding, the service can suffer at times. Being popular, Guu has a 2 hour table limit. However, when busy, service can be slow. At a recent visit, we waited for a dish that we had ordered for over 25 minutes. When it finally arrived, cold, so did the bill - which we had not requested. We were told we had about 10 minutes to eat and leave. We did write to the manager after this incident and he was very apologetic and offered to oversee our next visit himself.

Despite the time factor, I would highly recommend this restaurant when you want somewhere different but approachable!

I can't get enough of this place, food is EXCELLENT and very authentic. What makes it better is that the atmosphere in there is crazy, and there is such a positive energy right when you walk in! All the staff members and kitchen chefs greet you all at once in japanese. Its a very loud and noisy place, so if you are looking for somewhere romantic and quiet, this is not the place! All food items are like an appetizer portion, and ranging from $3-12 mostly, but looking on the menu you would want to try everything! One down side is that the place is kind of small, and they are always busy and do not take reservations. So on a friday/saturday night, a wait could last as long as 1-2 hours. But its worth it!! My personal favorite is the spinach cheese oysters...those you must try! I don't think i could ever be sick of GUU. Fantastic restaurant!

“A wonderful atmosphere and amazing experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2012

I was taken back a bit when I first walked in through the doors and everyone shouted and greeted us in Japanese. I wasn't quite sure how to react so I just waved and smiled. From that point on the experience was fantastic. The atmosphere there is so lively and friendly that it just makes you want to stay as long as possible and drink as much as possible. Unfortunately there is a 2 hour table limit. The food was great. It was an assortment of small dishes made for sharing and trying new things. It was a bit on the pricey side but if you're there more for the atmosphere and drinks then it's not too bad but if you're hungry and want to fill up, expect to pay a bit more. For my girlfriend and I, our bill was $110. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone!
