“Huge rooms, but no Wi-Fi”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2011

The cool thing about the Renaissance is that it is actually located inside the Roger’s Centre. From the hotel bar and restaurant Arriba, you have a spectacular view on the stadium. I stayed here for business for 9 nights, during which we saw the Blue Jays play the NY Yankees and the LA Angels. They also have rooms that look out on the stadium, which is great for sports fans, but not if you like daylight.

The room I had was on the Club level (6) and was huge. The bed was ridiculously large – I used up maybe a fifth – and very comfortable. The furniture was fine, nothing spectacular. The room was clean enough, as was the bathroom. It’s a shame that in a room that big, the closet was so close to the bed that you had to squeeze past it when the door was open.

My biggest gripe about this hotel is that there was no Wi-Fi in the rooms. Big hotels still brag about having super fast wired internet. Who cares when there is no way to plug that into a Smartphone, tablet or Mac Air? If you wanted Wi-Fi, you had to sit in the lobby, and who wants to do email or Skype with family in the entrance hall? While the room was good, the restaurant served great food, and the staff was helpful and friendly, I am deducting a whole point for this antiquated practice. If small B&Bs can offer free Wi-Fi, so should the big players.

Room Tip: Club level rooms are very spacious and they serve drinks and food in the seemingly endless corridor...

I got a free hotel from Tourism Toronto as part of The NFL Bills package. I stayed at Room 405 on Saturday, October 29.

Pros:
1. Location- just next door to the Rogers Centre
2. Staff- very friendly and knowledgeable front desk (with friendly housekeeping staff)
3. Rooms are very clean and quiet
4. Bathroom is big and clean
5. Aveda toiletries

Expectations not met:
1. As a Renaissance Hotel, I expected the following to be better but it came up a bit short:
a) Lobby- nothing fancy. In the hotel room when you turn on the TV, they showcase other Renaissance properties in other parts of the world. I think that is not a good idea as visitors compare what they have compared to others and you get the feeling that what you got is second rate for a Renaissance property.
b) The hallways are dull. To get to my room at 405 is like going through a maze. I understand that it's just the design of the hotel as they complemented the Rogers Centre. They could have made it better by putting some artistic frame by the hallways. Instead, all you see are empty walls leading to your room.

Overall assessment:
Yes, I would recommend this hotel to friends as I did not encounter any issues. However, I would probably try another hotel the next time I'm in town. I felt like I should have selected another hotel when I bought my tickets.

A decent hotel that is easy to find. Great location to access everything we wanted to do downtown. Not the newest hotel around but very clean and organized. It was a novelty to be able to look out from our rooms at the stadium. I would definately go back.

Had a wonderful stay at the hotel. The cost of our hotel included the most excellent breakfast (I'd recommend the fresh-made omelette). Perfect location for a Jays game or even a leafs game. Lot sof great restaurants near as well.

If you wanted to be in a sports skybox, this is the hotel for you. Part of there lobby is all glass that is part of the Blue Jays baseball, and their football teams skybox. You can have lunch and drinks while looking down on this beautiful field and never leave the comfort of your hotel. I was told you could also get a room to stay in, and they too are skybox rooms. Someone said you have to sign a wavior so when the games are on you have to be respectable in your room, or close the curtains! Great location to all the major sites, and Toronto is a really friendly city with new things to do and lots of things to see.

Room Tip: IF your want to watch a sporting event, get a room that open onto the stadium as a skybox!

My fiancé ad I stayed at this hotel and chose a stadium view room to watch the football game as my team (Edmonton Eskimos) were in town. The room was 300$ a night buts we had no tickets to buy and wanted to live that experience at least once. It was pretty cool, really enjoyed it. We parked under the rogers centre, wish they had maps of the parking at every exit, would be useful... They worked all night to remove the fake turf for a show the next day so we kept hearing lift truck beepers all night but it was to expect.

I have stayed in many, many Renaissance hotels as a platinum member of Marriott Rewards and this is one that fails to meet the standard of the brand. First and foremost, I was surprised at how dated the hotel was. The hotel was built in 1989, and while they claim to have performed a complete renovation in 2001, it is unapparent by the guest rooms.

My room was on the ninth floor and had a decent view. The room was neither small nor large; what struck me, however, was how sparsely it was furnished and decorated. The walls were a bright yellowish color that, with the carpet, created a very "old lady" feel in the room. I mention this because one of the great things about Renaissance hotels is their contemporary, modern edge and this hotel was anything but. The rooms were drab and boring.

The location was great, I suppose, if you are there for an event at the attached Rogers Centre Stadium. It is also a short distance from the CN Tower. I liked that there were convenience stores and restaurants all within walking distance. Unfortunately, the area in which the hotel is located lacks much character and shuts down at night, so if you want to go out drinking, etc., you will have to cab it to another part of town.

My interaction with the staff was pretty minimal. The hotel does not offer turndown service (so I was surprised by the four-star rating so many websites have assigned this hotel). If you drive, plan to park valet, which is pricey but really your only option. Marriott needs to dramatically renovate this hotel or change its brand designation. And this is most definitely no four-star hotel - it is at best three-star, and possibly two and a half.
