This is one of te destination restaurants in the city. Pricey, yes, but service is excellent and food quality is top notch.

I've eaten at Nota Bene a few times but after last evening I thought I'd get down to write comments. Generally I like this restaurant and my only 'complaint' is that as it is quite open it can be noisy when busy. All else is good. The food excellent with a solid wine list and the service is generally right on - attentive but not 'in your face'. For Jan 2013 the are featuring a prix fixe three course menu paired with three champagnes from Veuve Clicquot - Brut, Rose and the Demi-Sec. The pairings worked and for a price of $79 (including the champagne) was good value. One other item of note is that they do allow BYOW (Bring Your Own Wine) with a modest corkage fee. All in very good.

The restaurant is buzzy and clean. Tables are very close together - so you are packed in tight. The 2 person tables are just a bit too big such that you feel you are too far from one another and have to lean in to actually chat.

The wine list is incredibly expensive - actually obscenely so and really it is so unnecessary. 8oz glasses of wine to start at about $18 per glass. The cheapest red bottle on the menu starts at $55 and there is not much choice in that range even. The wine we picked was recommended and was actually decent.

The food was ok, portions are appropriate, provided you have a starter and also some of their bread that they provide. Our starters were decent, a duck salad was tasty and a truffle infused pasta was not bad, even though the pasta shape choice made it look like a plate of grubs. The mains were ok, nothing amazing. The rabbit papadelle was tasty, the short ribs were very bland and quite fatty. We didnt have a dessert.

Bill came to close to $200 for the two of us with tip and tax included (1 bottle of wine, 2 starters and 2 mains). Service was somewhat condescending and quite slow. This looks to be a place for the suits on a weeknight and it seems the good service must be reserved for the high rollers. There were a few group Christmas parties and the patronage was mostly (white) business men. The hostess didn't even thank us or wish us a good night when we left, despite us saying good night to her.

For the money we spent, we could have had a lot better meal elsewhere where our patronage might be a little more appreciated.

Nota Bene is seriously good food. I was there on a Wednesday night without a reservation, and the three of us were greeted pleasantly and seated immediately. Friendly and knowledgeable service. There is a special every day. I had a bison ragu - complex sauce and fresh pasta with an amazing texture - I think of it still - good food done simply - yet you can taste the skill in the simplicity. Pink grapefruit sorbet - amazing - like eating grapefruit in sorbet form. Yes, it is pricey - I wouldn't go there every night, but for a special occasion, or if you are in Toronto and want something to talk about at home, a great choice.

Had an outstanding dinner here on a cold Monday night. From warm greeting at the door to the theatrical server who knew the menu inside out, this is a special occasion place. Ceviche, short-rib pasta, lobster salad, scallops, and chocolate dessert were all outstanding. Partner had a single caramel truffle for dessert - best ever! Only dark cloud was ordering a half-portion of lobster salad at the server's suggestion and being charged full price of $24. minus $7.92....not exactly half price!
