We went with grandsons, the view of the Thunder Bay area is excellent, although there is no gift store or any store for that matter. It was $5 for the car to go up, so reasonable. It was a clear and beautiful day as well.

This was a great hike! Took awhile but we got to the top. The hike gets quite steep and the rocks are shaky so make sure you wear good hiking shoes and bring water.

So I don't know where to start to get to the top. Drive up paid the five dollars. And found the starting spot. Took about 30 mins to get up. Not very easy but we made it. Hard coming down too very steep. Once we rested at the top we crossed over the top towards the mill. Amazing view.

It is about a 40 minute vehicle ride to the admission gate from the city itself. There is an admission charge of $5 per vehicle. From here there is another 3 minute or so drive to a gravel parking lot. From this altitude you can view the city or climb to the summit. To reach the summit is another 25-30 minute vigorous climb. Wear good running shoes or hiking boots, not sandals! Upon reaching the top the city view is not readily apparent. You have to go past a number of communication towers to reach the city view. This is another 4 or 5 minutes. There is a bit of undergrowth (blueberries) that you will need to pass. Be prepared for a bit of a search to reach the vista.

I attended a concert on Mt McKay and it was pure magic! The sun began to set over the mountain and the suns evening glow passing over the city was hauntingly beautiful. As the city lights sparkled, you could see Salties (international cargo ships) lit up in the harbour waiting to embark on their journey East to the Atlantic Ocean. The wind is always present on Mt McKay and the spirits of the ancient people of the region can be felt as they fly free over the mountain and beyond. The shrine is a spiritual place and although sobering, it is very humbling to observe. The scenic lookout combined with the history of the First Nations people makes it a very emotional place if you quietly sit and listen...
