“Good if passing through.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012 via mobile

No frills but it's right off the trans Canada and the rooms were very clean. Great housekeeping!
The front desk folks were a tad rude to other people we saw who did not make a reservation, so I would suggest making one.
I wouldn't stay long term, but it did the trick as an overnight stay while passing through on a road trip.

We required a non-smoking room due to alergies and the room 141 reeked of smoke. The breakfast area is pathetic and the poorest of four Comfort Inns we stayed in. A counter with six stools in the main lobby and inadequate food. Had to take food to the room. Grossly over priced. We would never stay there again.

I am sorry that you were disappointed with your accommodations at our Comfort Inn. We do offer some smoking guestrooms, and unfortunately, the odour (at times) does permeate some of the other areas. Additionally, it is quite common for guests to step outside their guestrooms (via the patio doors to the parking area) for a cigarette. Again, the smell does come into the building.
We do serve our breakfast in the lobby area, and as such, we do not have a breakfast room, but do provide service trays to facilitate taking breakfast offerings back to the guestrooms. We are hopeful that we will be able to provide a new, comfortable breakfast area in the future.

So disappointing, reeked of cigarette smoke, musty, damp, dust everywhere (not cleaned properly). You cannot just put a sticker on a smoking room and call it non smoking. Cigarette burn holes on carpet and chair. Chairs and bed spread stained. Paying 146$ definitely not value for money. Should avoid.

10 July 2012 we stayed at the Comfort Inn in Thunder Bay. We have stayed at many Comfort Inns, but have to say this is the poorest one we have ever stayed in. We booked a non-smoking room, and it is a "old" smoking room, with a non-smoking plaque on the door. There were bugs on the floor, dirt around the back of the sink, and a cigarette burn in the tub. We travel a lot and know what quality Comfort Inn usually maintains - this one does not have any quality. The eating area has six bar height stools and there is no "new" area for a breakfast room. All the complaints individuals have posted on trip advisor are right on the mark. Paid a high price for room and got low quality. Fairly new bedding, spots on quilt top. Next time we pass through Thunder Bay we will be staying elsewhere.

I am truly sorry that your stay with us was uncomfortable. It is from the comments of our guests that we are able to identify any shortcomings and take the necessary steps to resolve any issues. You are absolutely correct in your comment that we have some non-smoking rooms that in previous years, were in a smoking area of the hotel. Unfortunately, we have been unable to replace all of the tub enclosures that may have sustained a burn from a carelessly laid burning cigarette. We all look forward to the time when we will no longer offer any smoking rooms!
Our breakfast is currently being served in our lobby, with carrying trays for any guests who would prefer to return to their rooms, as our current seating area is (indeed) very limited. Our future plans definately include an expanded hot breakfast offering and designated seating area.

The room itself was in need of a make over, old carpet, stained mattress etc...we stayed on the second floor....biggest complaint is the smell of smoke; we thought this was due to the room being an old smoking allowed room we later found out that the first floor under us is smoking allowed???? we where never told anything about this at time of booking and when we woke up i had a sore throat and my wife had very puffy eyes (we think from the smoke). when we issued a complaint the next morning we found out about the first floor smoking rooms and stated our concerns, they did give us a discount but the issue is a lack of concern for the health of the guests. The breakfast area is very small and can sit approximately 4 - 5 people and the toasters would not work; the "free" breakfast was a joke....
we have issued a complaint to the Guest Relations Department and hope that they can look into this locations issues......

Room Tip: in my opinion stay away from this location until they clean up their act ....

I am sorry to learn that your stay with us was less than satisfactory, but it is from the comments of our guests that we are able to identify our shortcomings and take the necessary steps to improve.
As you mention, we do still offer a few smoking guestrooms in our Inn, and unfortunately, the smell (at times) does come back into some guestrooms. It will be a great day when we are no longer offering any smoking accommodations!
Thank you for contacting our Guest Relations department, as this will allow me the opportunity to further address any of your concerns in a more personalized letter.

As many travellers know, there is variation within chains, and that is the case with Choice Hotel`s `Comfort Inn`as well. The Comfort Inn in Thunder Bay Ontario is at the low end of the rating scale in terms of, well, just about everything.

Booking a month in advance as a one night layover that was part of a larger trip, I made a single request - for a quiet room. I arrived to find I had been assigned a room directly opposite the doorway, which is arguably the worst room in the hotel for me.

Knowing I would not sleep if regularly serenaded by a clanging metal door, I asked to have this changed and was given another room, but had to pay an extra $10 for a `business room`. OK, no problem...whatever. I learned that $10 buys you the use of a dirty microwave oven and a refrigerator. I can only conclude that the prevailing view of the establishment is that non-business people have no need to warm their food or cool their drinks. Very odd.

The room was dirty. Plain and simple. The carpet had permanent stains and cigarette burns. This was a non smoking room, but clearly it had been a smoking room for years before someone screwed a `non smoking room`sign to the door. Voila! A non-smoking room. It still smelled of cigarettes and second hand smoke. Two dirt encrusted power bars had a number of dangling cords plugged into them. Peeling wall paper, food crumbs under the microwave, battered wooded baseboards...I could go on but you get the point.

After a few surprises, I elected not to move any furniture or look underneath anything as I felt that adopting a `what I don't know can't hurt me" attitude would be the only way to make it through the night.

I do not recommend this hotel. There are at least a couple of other options literally across the street that, for the same money, would likely be a better value. If you are not picky and dont mind the dirt and the wear and tear, then fine...book here. Otherwise, drive a little further down the road.

Room Tip: Not all main floor rooms are drive up. Request one if you need it.

Thank you for your comments. I also received the note you left after staying with us, and am truly sorry for any inconvenience you experienced. We are addressing the issues you have mentioned, and specifically the tangle of cords and plug ins you have shown in your picture. This was unacceptable and I am happy to say that your comments have certainly affected change in our guestrooms.
Additionally, the housekeeping issues have been addressed with the appropriate staff and I am happy to say that this was most certainly not our usual high standard of cleanliness.

This is our 2nd night of our vacation and yet another good room!. It was clean and quiet, and had a pretty large TV. Beds were great too.In the morning we managed to have a complimentary breakfast before we headed out. Nice Hotel! We also went to a nice casino while we were there and won!

Room Tip: This was an easy hotel to find, and very quiet
