We went for dinner on Aug. 10 around 5:30; had a reservation. We had planned to eat inside the classy restaurant but the weather was gorgeous so we decided to eat on the patio. Here the experience is quite different. Like a typical patio at any restaurant (but on a quieter street) although the same menu. Most people seemed to come for a drink and a burger. (I rated Atmosphere as excellent, since it certainly *is* in the indoor section of the restaurant.)
The bar and kitchen are quite far from the patio so the service was leisurely. (Although it took longer than usual even to get the waitress to take our drink order; it was a bit busy but not THAT busy. She seemed to have time to chat with the regulars. Granted they did clean a table for us very quickly when we got there.)
My wife had the salmon entree; I had the chicken (on the pesto pasta instead of the usual potatoes which I felt was a good decision.) We both agreed the food was fine. Not fabulous but we certainly were not disappointed as we often are at chain restaurants. Of course, the prices are also higher at The Parlour.
The waitress did check twice to make sure all was fine; but never did ask if we wanted coffee or dessert. In fact we felt she was just going through the motions; never friendly, never the usual question "Where are you from?" which is common in a tourist area like this. (We usually find the service more friendly in this type of restaurant in a small city.) I left a 12% tip (on the grand total including the tax.) I guess that was not considered to be enough although it *was* in this situation, IMHO. She seemed a bit cool; "thanks, have a good evening" and walked away quickly. (She never told us her name but her Clerk ID is 11 on the receipt.)
Considering the numerous Trip Advisor reviews, The Parlour's staff need to be aware that many customers are likely to post a review. Great food is a good start but a more friendly demeanor -- with *all* diners, not just the regulars -- is also important; Stratford is a small city where that friendliness is typical, in our experience (not a huge metropolis).
We will definitely be back for dinner again the next time we go to the theatre ... but indoors this time, to get the experience that other reviewers have reported.
